I change equipment fairly often, probably too often.  It's not really about keeping up with others for me but rather trying to find a club that fits my swing better and even more than that just to experiment with different clubs for fun.  There is something fun about a new driver or 3w in the bag for me.  The thing is that I rarely buy brand new and when I do it's usually a great deal (the last club I bought new was a Mizuno MP630 for $100 when everywhere else had them for $250); this way when I tire of them and want something different I don't loose too much trading them in or selling them... in some instances, I can even sell them for more than I bought them.

Hmmmm most reactions about say there is no need to change equipment, but we do and some say it is fun and so we do.

For me ..... I restarted playing golf last year and well I still had a 25 yrs old set in the garage, grips were bad so I went to a golfshop for some new grips and when they saw my Wilson Staff Tourblades of the mid eighties, they said there were better irons for a single handicaper (uhhh...... no handicap, but I left them unknown of that) ...... I used to play with these very well about 25 yrs ago.......

I picked up the game again, but it was almost impossible to hit these irons any good.

Being a Wilson guy I bought a new set ...... having a beard being 50 plus I was advised to go for the Wilson Staff Ci7 with Graphite Senior flex shafts ....... huhhhh nice clubs for a beginner and they were a bit floppy, but I liked them quite much and as soon as my hc. went down to about 22-20 within a few months I bought a FG Tour set online, but since I had to wait 2-3 months I bought a set of TM Tour in the meantime, replaced it for the FG Tour when they came in at last ...... couldn't handle these well enough and bought a set of Ping i15 ..... easy to hit, less feel.

Based on many-many-many recommendations here I bought a set of Mizuno MP-57, bc I wanted to be able to work the ball more than the i15 allowed........ played these for half a year, until I kept having good and bad days ...... then bought a secondhand Cobra S2 set, nothing wrong with these, but I didn't like the Graphite shafts ...... and recently bought my current set (my first set I was REALLY fitted for), Now I like the Titleist AP-2 very much, it has a nice blend of forgiviness and playabillity........

I figure it takes some time to figure out what fits you, and it also was fun comparing these sets in real life, playing them for several months to get to know what you really prefer.

Yess I have wasted some $$$, but at least the current choice has been made on some personal experience and the AP2 offers room for improvement.

As for drivers ...... it is even more complicated, as the options are not only the heads, but also the shafts, etc...... My current driver ........ I can hit really long and straight, some days I simply hit about all fairways and the next day, missing most, I can hit it 300+ yds and the next day hitting none beyond 250........ so maybe I am ready for a next investment ...... looking for a switch from D3 to D2 from 909 to 910 ....... but I also like the Cobra ZL and the TP9 Supertri ......

I thought about buying new irons this year, but then I thought, what if I actually hit a new set WORSE than my current set.  Mine are only about 2 years old and i still hit them ok if i make a good swing, decided to just get new grips and i think that did help.   Got a different putter recently and that helped too and got a good deal on ebay, my other putter was a cheapie from a walmart set.   Unless you have really old clubs, new ones probably wont help much.   Im just going to spend my money playing more often,  maybe try a few courses ive never played in my area.   Some people constantly talk about what they're going to buy or at least wish they could afford and dont enjoy playing right now.   Its like, well id love to have such and such set of irons and a this or that driver and on and on.   I think it can affect how you play, having confidence in your own equipment can help you perform better.

I play newer woods, G15 in my Ping bag, 909D3 in my Titleist, but my irons are 11 and 17 years old respectively. I haven't been playing them for that long (picked them up a few ago) but have no need to change. I have upgraded the shafts and grips on both sets of irons though, and tinker with length/lie/loft to satisfy my need for 'something new'.

I'm not a really good golfer (currently play to a 2.7), but like what I have and haven't found anything better that I need to throw money at. At the moment. But who knows, that next version of Ping or Titleist (my favs) might have me running down to the local shop to try them out!

    • Depends on the lie, pin location, green.  I would say most of my pitches are with my 60-degree.  Its probably like 90% 60-degree, 10% 56 degree.
    • Depends on my lie and the green I am working with. If I want to fly and stop, my 58* If I am looking for it to run a bit, my 54* And on occasion if the lie and green call for it, punch and run with my 7i
    • I did the RTJ trail, we just did Grand National and Capitol Hill. We were trying to minimize travel time. It gave us 5 courses to play. You pare playing 3 of the 5 we played.  If I had to pick, I would play the Lakes over the Links at Grand National. Links felt too penal on approach shots. If you can't get height or spin, it felt like every ball that hit the center of the green ran off the back. A lot of the greens require force carry, no running it up. It just wasn't that fun to play.   Judge - Really good course, some really cool holes and terrain.   Senator - Really fun open course. They call it link style, I can't remember how much you can play the ball down, but it has the aesthetic appeal.
    • I do that at the range; I just have been going through a half-assed pre-shot routine. 😇 I just kind of waltz up to the ball and hit it. I catch myself just going through the motions of aiming. Once I started aligning my club to an intermediate target, I felt like I was aligned way open to the target but just trusted it. Like, if the club was aimed at the flag in the middle of the green, then my body was aligned left of the green or more (assuming something like a 100+ yard shot). I think I was more concerned with where my feet were lined up and not the clubface.  A question on alignment then.  So, the ball is like what, 3-FT away from the toe target line. So, does that mean if my toe line is aimed at the flag, the club is aimed 3-ft right? Does the perception of the green looking smaller in the distance impact that in terms of how we hit the shot? I feel like the geometry should work that the ball is actually aimed 3-FT right.
