Can you explain this mentality?

I think he at first inclined to roll his eyes, but then I think he was a bit impressed with my instructors control on short distance and that got him interested in the end point. He ended up signing up for a lesson, so overall he must have liked the answer, even though it didn't specifically answer his original question.

Thanks, I've enjoyed learning from him and he's helped my swing a lot.  He actually commented on the pro's driving, and the obsession with distance after his little demonstration.  He said as an instructor it saddens him that so many of the top pro's can't hit the fairway more than 50% of the time with their drivers because they are so concerned about hitting it for distance and then mentioned Luke Donald.  He said he could probably hit his driver further, but he doesn't have to because his short game is so good, and given how he hits his driver he always has a great second shot into the green on a Par 4.  He said he might not get as many eagles on Par 5's like some of the longer hitters do, but he usually ends up with more birdies and less bogeys because he leaves himself in good position after his drives.

I bought one of these sets with overly-strong lofts, but it came with GW included, and I stopped using the 4i (I have a hybrid for that instead).  So basically you could just subtract one from the number on each club, and it's a set with more traditional lofts.  I have a fast swing, so I hit the ball high with all my irons, so it works well for me.

    • Unfortunately I don't have a mental record of putts that stand out, most recently a putt for eagle Sunday I think it was, but I mentioned it already. However last night I had a putt that, to me, was mood altering. I had a very stressful day at the cancer doctor with wife, waited over an hour and a half for a 2pm appointment. Then all of the chemo talk and hospice talk and anyways, just not pleasant. Our league kicks off at 5pm and I got to the course at 4:50, no warm up, just walk to the first tee and go. Got to the par 5 6th sitting at 6 over, I pushed my drive 260ish up the right into the other fairway rough, had a clean lie and good angle to green, promptly sliced a 5 wood to back left of green wide and long. Left me 60 yards plus or minus. Fatted my wedge to 16 foot of the hole. Keep in mind I was fuming, had been since the first hole, I was entertaining thoughts of walking off, I told my putter I was going to feed him to the gators, it was brutal. I got behind the ball and took some BS look at the line and just hit the putt and the damn ball went in for birdie. I leaped like Phil and fist pumped like Tiger all in the same move I think. I needed that little brief moment. It put me in a better mood and clamed me down. I still played like a hack the rest of the round, but so did everyone else now that I think about it. Extremely windy. I walked off with a 46, thats with a birdie. LOL
