Since I have received a couple of messages and threads about regripping golf clubs, I figured I would try and add some info for you guys about one of the most basic and easy ways to improve your golf clubs and save some money.

What you need:

  1. Utility Knife with Hooked Blade - to cut old grips, remove tape, and protect graphite shafts.
  2. Double Sided Tape - used to provide a lubricated surface to allow the grip to slide on
  3. Masking Tape - for building up grips (if needed).
  4. Grip Solvent - look for non toxic non odor options, odor free mineral spirits work well and can be found at home improvement stores
  5. New Grips

Step 1
Cut the old grip off.

Step 2
Remove all the old grip tape

Step 3
Build up grip with masking tape to desired thickness (if required) and apply a final layer of double sided tape. Make sure the tape goes on smoothly without air bubbles. Be sure to leave a little excess double sided tape over the butt of the shaft you can pigtail.

Step 4
Remove the backing from the double sided tape! This is an important step, and often times people forget to do this and get the grip stuck on half way.

Step 5
Spray the double sided tape down with solvent, making sure all areas are coated. Then spray an ample amount of solvent inside the grip (covering the drain hole with a tee or your finger). Cover the mouth of the grip with your finger and move the solvent back and forth and all around so the inside of the grip is properly coated. Once done pour the excess solvent on the tape as well.

Step 6
Slide the grip on the shaft and all the way down until the butt of the grip is firmly seated. Be sure you remove the tee from the drain hole so the air and excess solvent can escape before attempting this.

Step 7
Make final adjustments to be sure the logo is properly aligned and the grip is on straight.

Step 8
Allow the grip to dry at least two hours before playing.

Great Info Gas Can!

I am kind of a handy guy - but I've never done my own grips before.

What do you suppose the worst problem could be if I try this out myself?? (besides not taking the second side of double stick tape off).

I do take a standard size grip, so I guess build up is not necessary.

Also, there is no spray on/ liquid adhesive holding the grips on? Just the double sided grip tape?

Thanks!

Very nice guide gascan, I'll save this to my favourites should I decide to take a more hands-on approach to re-gripping.

On a seperate note, I got fitted yesterday and decided to take your advice and purchased the MP-60s. Stylish is an understatement, every club just oozes sex appeal. Thanks for the recommendation

just one more thing..

the more juice you use the easier it is to get the grips on..

Plus you can reuse the solvent if it lands in the bucket you can pour it in the back in the bottle..

Worst case scenario with grips is you get them stuck half way on and lose the cost of a grip. The only really dangerous act is cutting the grip off, be careful, use a hooked blade, take your time. Rushing is when people make mistakes and get hurt. You are correct that the double sided tape does not actually hold the grip on. The difference between the size of the grip and the shaft combined with the friction of the rubber is enough to hold the grip on. The double sided tape is only there to provide a lubricated surface so the grip can slide on easily. If you do decide to re-grip yourself, take a look at how little adhesive remains on the inside of your grip when you cut off the old ones. If you are good, you can install grips on a shaft without any tape at all using lots of solvent or an air compressor (which is great for removing grips as well). However, that's another post.

Its so incredibly easy its not funny. I've experimented with wrap grips lately (not a huge fan) and the trickiest part is just making sure their aligned correctly. Thats just eyeing it up though. Getting the grip off, removing the tape, applying new tape, using the solvent, and sticking on the grip is cake though. I'll never pay for anyone to do this again. Its also fun to by a variety of grips and try the different ones on your wedges (or whichever club you prefer) to get a feel of what you like the best. The grip is your connection to the club, in my opinion its extremely important to get something that performs with your body chemistry (if you sweat a lot in the hands like me) and a feel that is to your liking.

Cheers Gas Can,

A tip for anyone who tries their hand at this and get's their grip stuck half way and it dries....

Use a bicycle pump with a football adaptor. Put the adaptor in the end of the grip and pump away, the grip will then expand and slide off quite nicely without damaging it.

Thanks a million Gas_Can!

I just finished doing my grips for the coming season myself! You guys were all correct in that it is rather easy! No question, one must be careful and take time in the cutting off old grip process. But man, once that's done, it goes rather quick!

Add me to the list of guys who will do this themselves now thanks to you!!!

THANKYOU!

What about using a compressor to do it? I've been looking on here and can't find anything. Is this a bad method, seems to me it's a lot faster and easier

A great thread for us golfers who like to experiment, but want to avoid the fee of labor. I have seen the process done with a table mounted clamp to hold the club. I kind of wrote off doing it myself because of this. I think that the step where this would be helpful is removing the old tape, but I guess that it isn't required according to the above equipment list.

Are people doing it without a clamp to hold the club? If I could do it myself maybe I'll try the new decade grips! Thanks!

I used a vice with a rag in it so I didnt scratch up the shaft but I just cut off the old ones then threw a little wd-40 on it to get the old tape off, then put a piece of masking tape on, then just a tiny bit of wd-40 get the grip started on then put the air compressor up to the vent hole and blow some air in it while pushing it down the shaft. Worked perfectly, grips are on nicely. Waited about 10-15 minutes and they are plenty dry, they dont move around at all. Took me about half an hour for 5 clubs, 3 woods and 2 wedges. Then another 10-15 minutes for them to dry. I dont know if it actually took that long to dry but when I went back out there they were done.

thanks for posting this. i am sick of driving down to the shop i use just to have my clubs regripped when i know its one of the easiest things that can be done yourself. so now im going to print your post and try it myself next time. thanks!

Everyone was saying just have it done by the shop but I didnt feel like leaving my clubs at the shop. Really was very easy, toughest part was cutting the old ones off because I didnt want to cut the shaft at all and I didnt go buy a special blade to do it.

Another advantage is that I can hunt for grip deals.
If I go to a store to have my grips made, I probably have to buy the grips from the store, too.

I believe my local shop uses an air gun of some sort and shoots air up the grip to release the sticky bonds holding the tape.

I'm so glad I learned how to regrip myself. Saves a lot of money and time.

I agree. My pro has shown me how to do it and i do all the work myself when i need clubs regripped. I did my whole set of irons in only like 20-25 minutes. I just dont truth myself to align them properly so he does it once i have them on.
