Hi,

I'm waiting for my new irons (TM CB 5-7, TM MC 8-P) and they should arrive in a couple days. However, I noticed there is a change in the loft of these new clubs compared to the ones I had before.

I had the r7's and their lofts are

5 - 25deg

6- 28deg

7- 32deg

8- 36deg

9- 40deg

P- 45deg

The loft on my new irons are:

5 - 26deg

6- 29deg

7- 33deg

8- 38deg

9- 42deg

P- 47deg

I've been hitting my r7's for 4 years and I'm used to the distances on each iron, my question is if I should adjust the loft on my new irons or adapt to them as they come.... What would you do?

Thank you.

Based on loft alone, there will be about 6 yards or so difference on the 8-PW, and about 3 yards difference on the 5-7 irons.  Just figure out how far you are hitting the new ones and move on.

I would bend the 6 and 7 one degree weak and call it a day. Really, I would do that and then make sure the other lofts are right.

I am not so sure, it it just static, maybe the new irons are shorter/longer based on loft, but maybe the lie is better fitted, or the shafts are weaker/stronger, the grips might be more or less you size, the length of the shafts might be measured differently, the shaft length may differ, etc., etc., etc.

I mean just by looking to the lofts say little, it is the overall picture and when ever you change from club, it will take a few months at least to really dial in the distances.

I got new clubs about a month+ ago and I still don't have distances perfect but what I did when I got them was went to my course at a very off peak hour an basically played a round where I hit each approach shot 3 times. Once with the club Id normally use, once with one club up and once with 1 club down. It certainly helped me get a sense of what clubs to use in what situations.

Also I agree with Gerald. Even if you bend them to the old lofts the distances will still be completely different so I don't see the point really in bending them out of the box. These are whole new clubs, new shafts, new grips, perhaps different weights, spin ect. ect. you cannot assume just by loft that they will be too long or two short or anything really.

I would only bend them because you have some odd spaces. I looked at the website and the loft are a little different at 26 29 33 39 43 47. In your original post you had some 3, 4, and 5 degree gaps. The website is spaced better but you have a 6 degree gap in the middle. I know that I like 4 degrees between all my irons except going from 3 to 4.

I am in the same boat with my Ci9s.....stronger lofted than my Slingshots, my 9 is almost my old 7, and my GW is my old PW

Still getting used to it, have flown many green recently

Still have to go get fitted for them, maybe I'll change the lofts, but probably not, just try and get used to it

If you combine the previous posts that about covers it.  Distance is more than loft, shaft, lie, style of club also matter.  SGI clubs need stronger lofts partly because with all the weight in the bottom they can baloon.  Gaps and proper ball flight is what matters in irons, only woods are really maximum distance clubs,  When I got my new irons I took them to the range and hit them back to back with my old irons.  Under the same conditons you can quickly identify any performance differences between old and new clubs.  You will then know how great and distance and workability differences are and can easily adjust.

My current set of x18r's don't have very strong lofts compared to the CG16's i'm looking at now.

The difference:

Callaway x18r 7 iron: 165 yards

CG16 7 iron: 190 yards

This was on a Roger Dunn simulator.. so take it for what it is worth with regards to trusting simulator readings... but... wow. I honestly am considering not getting the CG16s just because of the massive short game gap I would have.

Thanks for your responses. I will hit them for a couple rounds and see how it feels and will compare with the distances Im actually hitting.

Thanks again.
