Alright, so this is the the first time in awhile I've had to get fit for a new set of irons and I'm still a little unsure of exactly what it is I need.  Some background first, my irons right now are MP 33's, my second set of them, and I absolutely love the look, feel, playability, everything really about them.  Been looking at the 63's and the 68's, they both look pure but after talking to a couple guys, still about 75-25 on getting the 68's over the 63's.

I don't feel like my performance has suffered much from playing a true blade, but after doing some other reading I hear about how much more forgiving the 63 is and might still be a suitable club for a 2 handicap.  I still haven't been able to just get to the range to hit both side by side to compare, hoping to do that this weekend, but I think if I haven't had trouble with the 33's and love how you can immediately tell when you hit it good or not, the 68 should be comparable right?

Now, onto the shaft flex.  I've played a DG S-300, 1/2" longer in my 2 sets til now, no noticable problems if I put a good swing on them, but after getting fit 2 times, my swing speed with a 6 iron is about 94 MPH and they've recommended an X-flex soft-stepped since I'm right in the middle.  From anyone that has experience making the change, what are the noticable differences if I decide to get the soft stepped X's?  Will I have to really make a good swing every time to get it to go straight and miss right a noticable amount if I don't?

Also, not sure if this would make a difference, but I'm looking at the KBS Tour shafts instead of the DG-S300, are these a little stiffer than normal and maybe the S flex would be appropriate?  I feel like my swing has just been rounding into form the last couple months, dropping from a 3.2 to a 1.4 this month, and wonder if the x shafts soft stepped might be that little extra to help my consistency.  I've never had a set that is really customized to my swing and wonder if making those changes will really help my game much.  Any insight would be awesome.  Thanks.

You could also consider a mixed set of 63s and 68s, giving you the best of both.

As far as shaft flex is concerned, be sure to try several options which are firmer than the S300.  What is your 6 iron distance?

I am currently playing the PX 6.5 in my irons, which I have been told is slightly firmer than the X100 from True Temper.  For what it's worth, my 6 iron carry is around 195 yards.  Compared to the S300s in my last set, these are much tighter in dispersion, even on missed shots.

Yea, I've seen a bunch of sets like that on ebay, I guess I just really need to hit a bunch of them to see if that's what I'd want to do.  My 6 iron carry distance is probably about 180.

First ..... I would expect a MP-69 later this year, buying a MP-68 now at full price wouldn't be the wisest investment.

I would certaintly advise also to have a look at the new Cobra S3 Pro !

I suppose I COULD wait.  However, whats prompting me to buy my new set now is that my newer set of 33's are snapping in half on me (5 of 7) because I was an idiot and soaked my grips awhile back and the insides of the shafts have rusted, making them brittle.  I'm now playing almost all of my backup set of 33's and the grooves on them are PRETTY worn out.  They're still serviceable and I can still play decent with them.  I figure I'm losing a fraction of the spin I could be getting with the older clubs.  What month do they typically release the new sets for ordering?

You were talking about which shafts to get, and are already more or less settled on Mizuno irons (good choice, BTW). Mizuno has a shaft optimizer - check it out at either a local golf shop or at a demo/fitting day. It will suggest 3 shafts for you based on a few swings. It's a fantastic device.

My index isn't low anymore like yours, but back in November I was playing off a 3 when I bought my MP63s.  GREAT clubs!  Definitely take a hard look at them before you buy.

    • Yeah I've been trying to weaken that hand (at the time I was also consciously trying to match clubface to spine)   I've found though weakening that hand kind of exacerbates the hook, I'm guessing a compensation from somewhere else creeps in 🤷🏻‍♂️   I've mentioned in my grip post that when I take my grip at address it is square, but if I stand up out of address and relax my arms it holds the hell out of the club, I have a lesson Tuesday hopefully to help but I just can't fathom why soft arms would hood the club, I would of thought it would open it 🤣
    • Day 6 - Full iron swings; focus was backswing speed and whipping my hands at the ball at impact.
    • Day 258: did a stack session.
    • Day 2 (4 Apr 25) - played in the weekly men’s group shootout.  Decent day off the tee and most longer approaches.  Wedges from 70-80 out were off, but green side work was good. Overall a fun day with the crew.
    • $50??? You're not serious, I'm sure. The only thing a $50 driver will be good for is to whip your horse  as you're rounding the far turn heading into the home stretch. Seriously, go to a big box store. They all have used clubs up the wazoo and you should be able to find clubs at a reasonable price. Also, talk to the guys there. You'll be able to tell just by conversing with them which ones are interested in helping you and will provide good advise. Those companies are usually pretty good about weeding out the bad apples who are only interested in making a quick sale. The commission the big box stores pay is so miniscucle anyway that sales guys are usually brand agnostic.
