I just purchased a new set of Cobra S3's and I really like them, well at least all the way up to the pitching wedge.  I have come from a set of Mizuno MP-52's (I liked them, just wanted something new and went for a more forgiving option, to be honest, I hit them further (I think loft), but not much else has changed).  My issue is that I have always used wedges that were blade style and I am not liking the wedges that came with the Cobra's.  It sounds easy enough to simply sub my old wedges, problem is with the 9 iron at like 40 deg, its not an easy thing to do.  The PW is 44 deg, I thought about using a 50 (bent to 49) a 54 and a 60 deg wedge, obviously I would buy new ones.  I was wondering if anyone had any comments on whether spacing or maximum loft were more important.  I currently have wedges from 48 deg to 62 deg in the 'fishing rod rack' (where all bad clubs go :) ).  Id appreciate some advice here, I can always learn to hit the 49 and 54 that come with the set and I have a 62deg Callaway X Forged with the MacDaddy grooves that I just put in rotation, its just a lil freaky looking at the cavity back wedges.

Thanks,

Dave

I have the same problem with my Wilson Di9 irons. They came 5-9 with three wedges, 42 degree PW, 46 degree AW, and 49.5 degree GAP wedge. The cavity back wedges are taking some getting used to. I am still carrying my old 56 degree blade SW, not a fan of the LOB wedge. My wedge play is getting better with the cavity backed wedges, it is definitely a different look at address. I am considering buying the 55 degree Wilson Di9 SW to complete the set. I would recommend you keep working with the cavity back wedges, once you get the feel I think you will like them.

OP, from what I've seen, most GI and SGI sets these days have a 44* or 45* PW, so I think you're in the ballpark with the S3's.  My Diablo Edge irons similarly have a 44* PW.  From there, I go with a gap wedge, either a Diablo Edge (49*) or Ping iWedge (50*), then 54* and 58* wedges (Ping iWedge or CG14 BP).  Works fine for me.

Where I did struggle quite a bit was with my set of Di9 irons that have the real funky lofts Vinny29 describes.

Equipment:
Ping K15 Driver (10.5º) - Diamana BB R flex; Ping G15 4 Wood (TFC R flex); Ping G15 20* Hybrid (TFC R flex); Ping G15 23* and 27* Hybrids (AWT R flex steel); Ping G15 Irons 6-GW (AWT R flex steel); Ping I-Wedge 54* Wedge; CG14 BP 58* Wedge; Odyssey Black Series Tour Designs #9 Putter

Jeffrey has spotted the trend. Cobra and TaylorMade led the way with super strong lofts in their SGI irons. Others have followed:

  • Callaway's std RazR X 6i = 28* | RazR X Tour = 29*
  • Cleveland std CG16  6i = 27* | CG16 Tour = 30*
  • Mizuno MX1000 6i = 28* | MP53 = 30*

The irons I played from 1994-2008 (Eye2 clones): 6i = 32* | PW = 50*

Pretty soon, we'll need a 10 iron between the 9i and PW.

Focus, connect and follow through!

My new set also has a 44* PW (uhhhh yes that is like a normal 9i) ...... There was a GW available (49*), but I decided to add a Bob Vokey 48* (and already had the BV 52 and 58) ...... maybe I will have the 52 bend to 53......

I played the 845s for 16 years and even though it had a real pw at 48*, it also had gap and sw. I never used the last 2 wedges and instead invested in a a pair of Cleveland 588s. I just felt that they were a better wedge.

    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
