For me it depends on the time of year. I live in MD, so winter golf for me = using the crappiest balls I can find. I lose enough just becuase of my terrible play, and winter conditions are not nice to balls. I will play with 1 ball all winter if I don't lose it- hahaa.

In prime conditions, I usually will play a ball until it's scratched or cut. I guess I'm not at the point in my game where I really get too choosy.

Pretty much same as BritBoy, especially if it's a major scuff from whacking a cart path. If it's a minor scuff, I usually wait until the round is complete to retire the ball.

my thoughts on how long I let a ball "last"... if I'm playing my usual HX Tour, I replace it after 9-12 holes (unless as another poster mentioned I nail a tree or a cart path...then it's immediately after I finish that hole) as the HX Tours, even the 'improved' version, tend to have low durability. But if I'm playing a more casual round, i.e no money is involved, or it's not a club game, then I'm usually using Nike Power Distance Soft, and I'll play the whole 18 holes with it.

If I could go thru a round without losing a ball, I'd play 1 ball. Now, in reality, I can't remember the last time I managed to play an entire round without losing at least a couple. That's one thing about being bad at this game, you don't have to wonder about when to switch to a new ball...you switch right after splash down or right after you give up and exit the woods!

As long as I can find it after every shot, it's a "lucky" ball and I'll use it for the whole round. If I shoot a good score, I may even tee of with on the next round. Same with the tee.

I allways have to have 3 new balls to start a round.I can usually play the whole round with one ball but i sometimes will switch after the 9th hole. This is the old "change your balls change your luck syndrome"

Just 1... I usually put about 3-4 rounds on a golf ball before it goes in my emergency bag. I use them for less than ideal conditions.

If it doesn't get scuffed up too bad or lost, I'll use it a whole round. More of a mental thing changing it out after the round also, rather than anything being wrong with the ball.

I subscribe to the change your ball change your luck thing. I'll usually use about 4-5 different balls during a round. I like to switch when I screw up, i.e. 3 putts, bad reads, bogeys, or just about anything I didn't like about a particular hole. I like to believe that the ball was at fault rather than myself!

I usually keep it in play the entire round unless it gets scuffed and then replace it, but I generally only do this when competing (tournaments, leagues, or gambling). I’ve been beating around the same Pro-V for the last 3 times I’ve played since it’s wintertime.

In a tournament I will use 1 ball per per 9 holes. Any other time I use a ball until it has a major flaw. I have played 3 or 4 rounds on a single ProV. In fact when I shot my lowest score ever I used a ProV that had to have had 3 rounds on it already. I am not made of money and at $3-$4 a ball I get my money's worth. My buddy, who is a 1 handicap, uses balls until you can barely read the ProV on it anymore. I know it probably changes the way a ball reacts but not enough for me to notice.

I believe if you can play one round with 1 ball, which most can't...you should. You finish your round with a good feeling knowing you only used one...even if it's scuffed. Odds are, if you do that, you will have a good score to go along with it anyway. Use it the next round too until your first bogey :o)

    • Day 287 6-16 Full, fast swings with controlling low point. Did ok just wasnt feeling it tonight. Recorded swing, no ball.
    • I'm good with the bunkers, and the fairways are SUPER wide. Three yards should stop a ball that isn't landing in it from rolling into the hay.
    • I'm a little behind, but I just finished listening to the episode about practicing while on vacation.  I have two vacations coming up this month that I won't be bringing golf clubs with me on, and this was perfectly timed (I'm sure I am not the only one going on vacation in June).   Especially the part about stretching.  I keep putting off adding stretching, with golf in mind, to my daily routine.  I think I'm going to use these upcoming vacations, the first of which I'm flying off to on Thursday, as a way to get into this habit.   For anyone else interested, Fit For Golf (see sidebar) has fantastic stretching routines (some of which, I think, are on their free area).  I really should get back to doing their main exercises too.  I don't have any affiliation with them beyond "satisfied customer," in case that sounds like an ad. I may end up posting in the 5 minutes thread when I do golf stretches if it's my only practice that day... as if I don't already sound like a broken mp3 with my 10-15 minutes hitting indoors part. And back to the topic:  anyone not caught up on the podcast should consider catching up and listen to that episode, especially if you're going on a non-golf vacation this summer and want some practice ideas that aren't the at-home practice routine from LSW about long bunker shots (which I am sure we all do regularly).
    • Mostly pull cuts to slices. Some random pull draw/hooks pending of I hit the toe.
    • What's the rest of that story? Where was the ball going?
