Both my driver and irons are 5 years old. I currently have to money to replace one, not both. Which one should I replace first?

Is that all your money? Neither.

If it's just a golf budget issue, you could go with a 1-2 year old set of each and replace them both.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

I'd say if you hit your irons well and use your driver often I'd go with the driver as I think greater advances have been made in drivers during that time.

No, I will eventually replace both before the end of the year, just wondering which to go with first.

That's what I was thinking, just wanted to get some opinions. Though, I've been drooling over the new Callaway Razr X irons!

If you're going to replace both I'd definitely do the driver first as it will be easier for you to get used to mid-season.  New irons might take more time for you to adjust to distance wise, etc.  Where as if you get fitted and hit the driver well you can just hit the course.  The Razr X irons are nice, I tried them out when I bought my Diablo Edges at the beginning of the year.  Since you are a lower handicap than I am, you might also want to try the Mizuno JPX 800's and JPX 800 Pro's, very nice irons too.

Ended up buying the Diablo Octane. It was down to $199 from $299. Plus, they gave me $40 for my old driver, so I got it for $159! I hit both my old and new driver on their launch monitor. I was averaging about 210-215 carry with my old driver, about 225-230 carry with the new one. Can't wait to take it out to the range!

I have the Octane Tour and picked up a good 10 yards over my 2006 Big Bertha 454.  I think that was the bigger bang for your buck especially at the price you scored it at.

Look for a demo day that Callaway is attending, should be able to try one there.  I had similar issues when shopping for irons, most stores have limited selection and demos for us lefties.

    • I'll say again… you have a different definition of "temporary" and "speed" than I do. For your handicap to go up FOUR shots means you were through the soft cap and approaching the hard cap. If you did it over 15 rounds (leaving five potentially lower scores), then you played REALLY bad golf over that stretch because it's likely that only three or four of the best of those 15 rounds were actually counted, so if the three or four best scores RAISED your handicap five shots (three at 100%, 2 at 50% once you hit the soft cap), then that's some BAD golf over an extended (not temporary) period of time. And here's the thing… play 15 good rounds, or even just EIGHT, and it'll DROP again, even faster. Handicaps still drop faster than they rise, not only because of the way we calculate it (best 😎 but because of the caps. Right… it's not like you're not needing the shots. You're playing really badly, and your handicap is still lagging behind your play.
