HI all,

I'm starting to really play (amateur, maybe 2-3 times a month)  and I'm wondering what set (brand?  kind?) of clubs to get.  I don't want something low end, but I also don't need high-end clubs.  I'd like something in the middle, good enough that I can hit.  I was thinking under $250, is this possible?

All suggestions appreciated!

I went with Nike Slingshots to replace the old clubs my dad gave me. I can hit them a good 10-15 yards farther than my old clubs. $299 for steel shafts, and comes with a hybrid.

I coulda sworn I left the cart right here......

I would look at used clubs. Check you local Kijiji for a nice set of Callaway X-18s,TaylorMade RAC OS2 Irons, or Ping Eye 2s. I also play Slingshots like inebriated. If you can find a set for under 300 they are great clubs. But as a beginner I don't think I would go spend 500 bucks on a new set of irons. Also alot of good deal on R9, G10 and FT-9 drivers right now.

I would say to go with some Ping g10's or Ping raptures or go to my local golfsmith or whatever golf store in your area and hit a bunch of different irons to get a feel of what is comfortable to you.  I know my golfsmith has a bunch of used sets of irons, so you might be able to find a nice used set for cheap. Good luck

Find a golf shop that has decent used clubs, and try some sets. If you have been taking lessons, you might ask your pro for advice.

As a beginner, don't feel you need all 14 clubs right away. Irons of 5-PW, a SW, a putter, a driver, a 4W (or 5W) and a hybrid would get you started.

Also get a static fitting: checks to make sure clubs are proper length and lie for your body build and stance. Lie check should involve impact tape on sole of irons to make sure irons aren't too upright or flat in lie.

Definitely stay away from eBay/online at this time. Again, make sure you test the clubs in person and get a basic fitting.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
