Right guys ive jsut spent best part of 2 hours googling and searching on here reading through copious amounts of threads and advice as to why i shank my wedges

Ive only just recently stopped shanking my irons, but is after many hours of practice and completely re-working my swing form scratch, i basically started again as i feared I had started learning to many bad habits trying to resolve issues and consequently creating another problem

So my irons are getting better

but my wedges are still dreadful, and after all the reading ive done and going through my head about what im trying to do is it possible im playing the ball to far back in my stance?

ive struggled with alignment lately, doing the school boy error or aiming dead centre or right and then pushing the ball to the right of target, but ive corrected that.

could i be playing it to far back? i think my swing is okay, it doesnt feel any different to my other swings, and i play with my arms quite close to me body naturally anyway

Place a ball between two tees and focus on hitting the ball and not the tees, do this for around 5 - 10 minutes and then remove the tees and keep hitting for another 20 minutes. Repeat if necessary

Shanks will be gone.

Problem seems simply not closing the face on impact since the ball is in the back of your stance. Kieran123's advice should work fine. Try a stronger grip (just for your wedges). This encourages squaring the club at impact for a short back of stance swing.

Yeah sometimes I shank when I start decellerating at the ball... so I'll just give one a huge swing and usually I'm fixed haha

I make a concious effort now to not wimp out of the shot, but shanks remain

Will try the two tees drill Kieran mentioned

Then try the ball forward in my stance a little,

Have been doing that to, part of my new "basic" swing, shoulders and hips turn simultaneously leading the arms into the back swing, and not the arms leading the shoulders etc etc

bunking off now to catch an earlier train home, will report back tomorrow!

Shanks are caused by the following,

1) a severe over the top swing bringing the hozel into play

2) Your waist getting closer to the ball during the downswing forcing you to swing away more, bringing the hozel into play

3) club face is way to open, which can cause a shank type shot, but not a true shank

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
    • Have you measured? 🙂
    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
