I saw a video that I can not find again on here a few nights ago that was discussing where to stand when your address the ball. Now, I am new to golf and had a sick slice that was fixed by simply moving my stance to put the ball toward the front of my stance when I am driving. But I have heard 2 different stories for approaching with irons. I have watched videos that say to align the ball with your belt buckle for every iron and then others, like Martin Hall on the Golf Academy series, that say the ball should be closer to your left foot (RH golfer) then progressively move toward your belt buckle as you move from the low irons to high irons. Can someone tell me what is the actual best way to approach for irons?

Everyone is different, there are several different opinions you will get. essentially your higher lofted clubs should be played off your back foot and move forward as you decrease loft. Its hard to say without seeing were you are contacting the ground.

Play the 8iron from the middle of your stance and progressively move a ball back for higher lofted clubs and a ball or so forward for every lower lofted club, in my humble opinion...

Unless you have stance width like Albert Pujols, that seems pretty tough to pull off.

Tiger and a few others advocate the 3 ball theory...essentially playing only 3 different positions in the stance. I try to basically do that because it's simple for me and I try to keep the setup fundamentals as simple and consistent as possible. I've added 2 special positions...I have a 'rear' position that's almost off my back foot, and a 'forward' position that's almost to my front. The rear position is to really trap the ball, the forward position is to try and hit a ball higher. I probably use those two special positions once, maybe twice a round total...and I probably hit a trap 4/5 times I'm using a special position.

I try to keep the ball near the middle of my stance, though, the 3 ball theory.

Because I have a strong grip and because I play a windy course with small greens most of the time, my error tends to be getting the ball too far back because I get into this rut of wanting to really control the ball and keep it down, and then I start setting up with remants of that approach all the time. It's not so bad I guess, but I start to run into issues with the 'long' clubs when I fall into that pattern.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
