So I went to the range on Friday thinking, "Maybe I don't swing like Moe Norman, but I wonder what would happen if I tried to copy his mannerisms and cadence while I hit balls talking with people."  I'm hear to say, all that gets you is sore wrists and fewer friends.  Just FYI.

Thank you for posting this, it just literally made my day! :-)

I will say that I always set up my Driver 5" behind the ball...

Talk like Moe? Takes hard work. Takes hard work.

There is an entire forum dedicated to swinging like Moe as taught by Grave Golf. Here's the Moe Norman Discussion section:

I sometimes think of "This dumb guy" / "That dumb guy" when I know I'm overcooking a shot in my mind. I don't stay on it, but it gets me out of a bad headspace once in a while. When that doesn't work, visualizing something involving Scarlett Johannson usually does the trick. Or thinking of great Pittsburgh Steeler moments. Anything.

He's fun to listen to, though sometimes contradictory.  My favorites are when any one of 20 people ask him, "Moe, what's the most important thing in the golf swing?"  I've heard at least 4 different answers from him.  I haven't really adopted his setup at all, though I have started putting my hands further away and higher in the air.  It feels like I can keep the club on plane a little better.  It requires strengthening your grip slightly, otherwise they can't hinge properly.  Just monkeying around with it....  Works pretty well on short shots, as long as you don't let tension into your wrists.

I think the thing about golf technique that's so interesting is how people like Moe can become the straightest hitters ever, or people like Bobby Locke can become the best putter ever.  When other people try to copy it, it just makes them worse off.  Is that any random technique with otherworldly hand-eye coordination?  Curious...

Thread Creep Alert:

Swinging like Moe is the best thing I every started. Went from an 18.0 that was not getting better no matter what to a 7.2 last year. Dropped some right away but, like all things golf, change takes some time. Hovering around 9.0 this year but my long game and iron game are fine. Concept is simple, set up with the club on the same plane that you want it at impact.

To see Moe's swing, try searching "Moe Norman" on youtube or moenormangolf.com

If you find video of one of his ball-sriking demos, you'll hear his sing-song speaking style and see one pure swing after another that looks so very simple.
