Let me explain.......

Sunday morning our 4-some teed off at 7am. It was a warm morning but by 7:30 it began to sprinkle. At 8am it was RAINING! Now let me say this....it rains here in Huntington Beach about 5 days a YEAR, and that's enough to give us WIMPS a heart-attack . I just don't know HOW you guys back east can do it???

Anyway, we are getting SOAKED to the bone. None of us has "rain-gear" and we sure as hell don't own umbrellas, but we're having fun so we decide to "play on". Midway thru the round I can barely hold on to a club because the grips are so wet.....hell, I didn't know you were supposed to COVER your bag???

The 8th hole tee box is an elevated one that you hit over a lake. As soon as I started my follow-thru.....whoosh.....my SUMO2 flew about 50 feet in the air and "ker-plunk"......right in the lake!

Now my partners are rolling around in the wet grass laughing so hard their sides hurt....where as me....well, you can't tell if it's just rain on my face.....or I'm crying.

The course 'super said he would try to get it this week, but I have learned that the 5 days a year it rains here....I'm going BOWLING!!!

That's brutal... but I bet you're really good at that golf exercise where you throw your club down the target line after you strike the ball...

And an expensive club too. Since I'm considering a Sumo/Sumo 2 I saw your thread and just thought it was someone bashing the Sumo 2.

The big question is: did you like it enough to get another one?

Hey Colin, this is a TRUE STORY!!!!!!

I LOVE my SUMO2!!! You can find my reviews on it in the equipment section. The course superintendant is going to try to retrieve it for me, but if he can't I'll DEFINATELY buy another!!!

On a similar story, I was at a golf course with a lake right off of the tee box and as we were teeing off, we could see that a diver was in the lake so we asked the guy standing on shore what was going on. He indicated that he was teeing off (some days earlier) and his driver also flew out of his hands and right into the lake so he hired a diver to retrieve it. As we left, the diver had actually found a few clubs but not the one he was looking for.

The course 'super said he would try to get it this week,

Pls. let us know if you recover your SUMO2; also, pls. let us know if there was any damage or other negative effects of spending some time in the drink if it is recovered. Thanks. And good luck . . .

I know balls lose some compression after significant time in the drink, but I've never heard (one way or the other) about clubs... this should be interesting.

Me personally, I wouldnt be able to play with that club again if it spent a week in a lake. Even if there are no articles on negative effects on clubs spending extended time in water. I would sell it on Ebay and take that money and buy another one.

**And im not saying to scam someone, because there probably are no negative effects on it sitting in water, however, mentally I would find it difficult to play with.....Let us know how it goes.

If you were already soaked you should have took a swim and got your club back since you knew right where it went in.

A buddy I golf with carries a rock club, just in case he gets near one, on one under one, whatever. Then he plays that club and doesnt care about scratching it etc.

So have you ever thought of carrying a water club in the rain?

Sorry couldnt resist... I feel bad for you. There have been many times I've wanted to throw my driver in the lake, but you story would just suck!!!

Funny, I used to do this. When I first started, I was using a friend's clubs at the driving range (with said friend), but I wanted to go on my own. The range had for $5 "experienced irons" - I got a PW and 7I. That PW stayed in my bag until last November, when keeping it would've meant a total of 14. Now, I don't know what to hit when I'm near a rock.

I'm surprised it didn't float. Seems like most of the 400+cc drivers do so long as the shaft isn't too heavy.

mrbillinoc -- ever get the Sumo2 back?

Nope, the course 'super said they tried....and I believe him. Went down and bought another one, had the Aldila NVS 65R shaft put in it...BUT definately changed the grip! One thing for sure...you can't mix up my driver with another one...SUMO2 head, Aldila shaft...and a PING grip!!! ...maybe I should get a TaylorMade headcover for it???

Too bad you didnt get it back - maybe it would have made the sound different - more "aquatic" :).

I got a Sumo2 too and i love it - first time i ever crossed the 300m mark with a driver (no backwind, flat fairway, elevated tee box for about 3m).

BTW - how high do you tee it up with your Sumo2 normally - i had a TM R7 before and teed it up quite high (about 1/3-1/2 ball looked over the clubface) with the Sumo2 i like it more center faced personally - you?

I thought it would have floated also. My R7 does. I went to dunk it in water to get the mud off of it and dry it and I had a hard time dunking it.
