Hey Guys,

I have noticed that my "natural" swing does involve some of the "stack and tilt" components, but not all of them. I do however am able to learn from watching video and can (in my mind) perform a very good "stack and tilt" swing with all the components. My question is, should I think to swing more "stack and tilt" and perform all of the components or just swing naturally and passively perform some of the components? I tried hitting some "stack and tilt" shots last night at the range with the whole flying wedge, hands deep on the backswing and hit some good shots. I feel that I can repeat this swing, it just takes more swing thoughts and my current one for my natural swing which is turn my left shoulder behind the ball (I do stay centered on my backswing). Thanks for your advice.

Everyone who can break 120 on occasion has "some of the components."

You get the same advice as everyone, really:

  • You get a lot "for free." Nobody takes their shoulders back perfectly horizontal, nobody fails to take their hands in at least a little bit, almost nobody immediately bends their arms and keeps them bent, etc.
  • Find the piece which is tops in your priority list and work on that. One swing thought at a time, one piece at a time. Spend a few months (seriously) working on that one piece, then re-assess. What's the next piece?
  • We don't give people seven, five, or even three things to work on (occasionally we give three at our schools but it's a full day and progress is made, and we're clear about the ordering of those three things for when the student leaves). There's a reason for that.

Adopt the pieces you need (and like).

We gave a lesson to a guy who hit the ball low and not very far. His shoulder turn was limited. His shoulder turn was pretty flat, and he set up with 70% of his weight on his right foot (as a righty), but he drew the ball and hit it solidly every time.

So we taught him to extend more in the backswing to help increase his shoulder turn and to add more of that lever, and to extend and tuck the butt in the follow through to give him even more speed (power) and to help bring the ball flight up.

S&T; are simply components with a measurable range. Take the pieces you want or need, plug them in, and go about your day. Just take one at a time, please. Any more than one and it gets confusing/difficult.

Thanks Iacas for your response. That is kind of the mindset that I was leaning towards because I seem to play the best when the swing thoughts are low and the shot making thoughts are high. I will try and get a video of my swing, both natural and "stack and tilt" and post them on here and see which one looks fundamentally better. I have had other videos posted in other threads but I have changed so many aspects since then that those videos are irrelevant.

If you want consistency then components of the stack and tilt are for you. But I'll stop now because I make people nauseous when I talk too much about it... :-)

I am a passive user of S&T;, i find my swing to be more fluid and less constrictive when i use what i need. I like that personally with my swing, its more comfortable. I guess its probably because i have been playing golf seriously for over 10 years, so i have built up certain flexibility with my swing.

The things i have mentally worked on, not dragging myself off the ball with my swing, that means not shifting my body to the right. I also keep a straighter left arm, and feel more connected in the chest. I do not mentally concern myself with the hips at all. I got way to much hip action, honestly i have to think not to rotate my hips in the backswing, or they get way to rotated, and i overextend. im pretty damn flexible with rotation.

Thanks everyone. I decided to stick with my natural swing and shot a 72 (74.0/133) even par today. This is the least I have ever thought about my swing and my best score I have shot in a while.
