Hmmm.... theSandTrap.com often makes a lot of bold predictions in regards to player performance over the coming year. One that does not often come up though is who is going to have the biggest choke of the year. Based on his performance this week my current prediction has to Lefty. What's yours?

You're really going out on a limb there aren't you!? So are you predicting that lefty's most recent collapse will be the biggest choke or are you saying that he as a player will continue to collapse in big spots?

I think that he rebounds personally. My prediction for biggest collapse is Charles Howell III's remainder of the season. 2 runner up's and a W early, but what will he do from here on out? Obviously I don't think he'll suddenly start missing cuts, but I'm saying by choking is that he will again not contend at any majors this year and end the season with the same number of wins as he currently has in his career, 2.

Philly Mick is always good for a handful of meltdowns during any given season, he has mastered the artform, hey, he's a gambler and loves to lose almost as much as to win, after all it makes the winning taste a little sweeter, or so the logic goes.

I don't see CH III going to pieces, he is putting on final round charges on the back 9 and that is a sign of someone on the ascendent. That means he is in shape, his game is solid and he trusts his swing, the knock against him has always been his short game but it's getting better and he came through under pressure this week.

Sounds almost exactly like what lots of folks used to love to say about The King!

OK I will go out on a limb and say Tiger will spit the bit at the British Open.Remember you heard it here first.

I don't think that would qualify as a choke.

I'm gonna have to agree with CHIII, I don't know if he has the stamina to last the whole season. Rootin' for him though.

I still don't really see how Phil choked. CHIII only shot a final-round 65 to catch Lefty. It's not Phil shot an 80 in the final round. I believe it was a 68 wasn't it? That's pretty damn solid at Riviera.

Sad for Phil. Happy for Chas. They both needed that win.

Phil lips out two short putts, sticks his wedge in the ground and chunks a chip shot and then loses to a par in the play-off... the choke of the year is already behind us.

Howell's up and down on 10 in the playoff was one of the toughest ever. This experience should help him win again this year.

OK, I'll remember I heard it here first. Only problem is I don't know what "spit the bit" means.

I'll go out on a limb (if it will hold me) and say that John Daly will shoot an 80 or better. I'll even say it will be this week at the pods.

I hope any such a choke will be accompanied by a back 9 of -7 to take the cup, by a young gun... ok, this is fantasy league stuff, but it would be great if it's Tiger choking, and Sergio Garcia burning the course.

Okay you guys, you gotta give me this one. Big John shot a 40 on the back nine in the 2nd round of the Pods and then withdrew!!!!! I called it

Well, can this be considered a choke though? It's kinda expected anymore.

Tiger's missed putt is leading the pack for me.

I don't know if it is choking technically. I think John played poorly cause of that injury he sustained last week or two. Choking is more when your mental state gets in the way of your physical ability to perform. Either way, there will be plenty more time this year for choking . . .

    • I don't think the viewer at home can pick up on pace of play, unless the announcers mention something. The telecast has the luxury of bouncing from player to player, which ensures we the viewer always have something to watch.  I think we would notice pace of play if the camera just followed one golfer for an entire round. Or  You were actually golfing behind the slow group Or  The slow group is the last to only group left to finish the tournament.  I like the idea of having a person carrying a digital clock, following each golfer. When the golfer gets to the ball and the group in front of them has cleared they have 60 seconds or they get a penalty stroke. Maybe a second violation is a 2 stroke penalty.  Or as I have said before, every golfer wears a shock collar!!!!! at 1 min 1 second that golfer if going to drop. It will take them a good 30 second to recover, leaving them with another 30 seconds to hit the shot. The course would be littered with golfers just convulsing on fair way from an endless cycle of shocks because they cant seem to hit their ball and keep pace of play.
    • This isn't the same thing.  This is entirely a time of year thing. Not a trend.  This is the COVID year.  There are many who think the Masters viewership was actually way up. The 2024 ratings being down is only for CBS televisions. It doesn't include anyone (including me) who watched it online.
    • Ha, I didn't even notice that "NFL competition" part… I just dismissed it on face because pause has very little if any role in TV ratings.
    • Wait a second. That is a bit misleading to drag a 4 year old headline about the ratings when the Masters was delayed during the pandemic. The 2024 ratings were down but not to the extent that this headline would imply. Also, @iacas is correct. Any ratings drop has very little, or perhaps, nothing to do with pace of play.
