I couldn't play any golf for almost 4 months and it really showed.  I was almost back to square 1, so I thought I should kind of start from scratch and really work on getting good fundamentals.  My swing has improved.  I feel a lot better and confident with how I'm swinging but... I've noticed the biggest (almost only) improvement on my wedges.  In fact, today I hit my 56° a lot more distance than what I had been able to.  I've never been a long hitter but they were going straight and I could score well.  I know that making changes to my swing will be a case of really getting worse before it gets better.  And that's ok.  I am willing to put the time and effort in.  But I am at a loss as to why I can hit my wedges so well and my irons so bad.  Not getting any distance at all with my irons and the ball flight is consistently a push.  So today I took my 60°, 56°, 52° (Cleveland CG10s, steel) and the GW from my irons (graphite Exsar IS4) which is a 50°, I hit good shots from all but the GW.  With the GW, the push appears.  Starting to feel a little disappointed.  Could lie/loft be an issue?  Any thoughts?

Im guessing its a swing issue but it is a good idea to get your lie's check on your clubs. Check out Tom Watsons book at barnes and noble, got some really good fundamentals for a sound swing.

My pushes are if I take the club back on a longer than usual path back on my backswing or

This could be it.  I usually don't push the ball if I do half or 3/4 swings.

When you're starting out, and even when you're experienced, issues and misses are magnified as the loft goes lower and the shaft gets longer.  The advice to practice 1/2 and 3/4 swings with your irons is good advice.  Focus on solid contact, not power.

Thank you all for the advice.  I will be practicing my 3/4 and half swings and follow the drills on Tom Watson's book for the next weeks and let you know how it goes.  Thanks again  :)

My push shots were simply a case of my swing being exactly as I wanted it to be but my grip being too weak. I just strengthened my grip and my draw came back.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
    • Have you measured? 🙂
    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
