I had been thinking a week or two ago about how cool it would be to play in a tournament. With my HC I wouldn't have any notion about winning but just thought it'd be cool. After reading this thread I poked around yet internet and found this about the North East New York Capital Region Amateur Golf Association which is affiliated in some way with the PGA: http://neny.pga.com/lagolf/ They don't have anything on the website for 2015 which is interesting, though. @colin007 have you ever heard of this?

I actually have not. Sounds interesting. Not having an official handicap, I would have to fix that before entering anything. You going to investigate?

It would be awesome to try.

Keep one other thing in mind...they now send you a 1099 at the end of the year on your winnings. You get a gift card that you pay taxes when used and the Golf Channel sends you a 1099 on your winnings.

Also the Golf Galaxy cards you are issued when you win.....Golf Channel paid 80 cents on the dollar for them. And then they send you a 1099 at the end of the year.

Getting a 1099 for a gift card, seems odd to me.

Me too.  I have not received one this year either, so maybe this is something they are starting just for 2015.

I'll consider doing it if you do. ;)

No sir...actually this past year as I'm waiting to hear back from my CPA on whether or not I can expense entry fee and travel expenses.

And yes many of us felt it very odd that they were sending us 1099 for our winnings of gift cards.

You should be able to expense that, still a pain to have to do it.  I used to have to do it when I played in a band, some places paid you in a check and sent you a 1099 and others just paid in cash.  But my expenses were always way more than I ever made.  I think if they are considering this income, you could also expense golf balls, clubs, etc.

Someone in the highest handicap flight shot a 180 in the 4th round at nationals last year

Either that's a heck of a lot of lost balls or he couldn't putt for some reason. . .

There has to be a story behind this because it looks awfully fishy.  My guess:  Dude was so far out of it he just didn't care and was farting around and trying to get a certain score on every hole.  Or something stupid.  I mean, look:

Quote:
# 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 OUT
Par 4 4 3 4 4 4 5 4 3 35
R4 11 11 10 11 10 10 10 10 10 93
10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 IN
4 4 4 3 5 4 5 3 4 36
10 10 10 11 10 10 12 3 11 87
Eagle Birdie Bogey Dbl bogey
Except for one 12 or one 3, its 11's and 10's on every hole.
(He shot 108, 123, 110 for the first three rounds and was not in last place ;))

Whoops, that table screwed up my formatting.  The previous two sentences were also mine.

(Shoudl just tell people "I shot 93-87 the final day" and give no specifics and they'll all assume he played two good rounds of 18. ;)

I think he broke the rules of golf, which I remember stating that you should play to your best ability. OTOH, it probably doesn't really matter in this case because he is capped at 40 for a HC anyway.

Agreed, it's strange. . .

My first tournament out, I made a 9 on the first hole (par 4). I looked like I belonged in the highest handicap flight, almost certain that I hadn't made more than a 7 on a par 4 all year till that point.

The actual number is $1500.00.

That is actually a higher threshold than what you have to report in gambling winnings at a race track, on slot machines or on bingo games .  I don't really see that as a surprise or that big of a deal.  And certainly not the Golf Channels doing either.  The would be the government, and would certainly apply to any other tour as well, would it not?

I guess if it was cash I could see it, but it's not. Especially if you're entry fees fare exceed the money you won.

I would try and agree with you if it was a one time winning of $1500.00.

But receiving gift cards over a period of 10 tournaments for $200 here and another $150 at another tournament and so forth should not be subject to a 1099. If it was all won in one tournament...maybe but not over the course of the whole year.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
