Today when I played I putted really well, but noticed that I was setting up so that the ball was not in the middle of the head, but more towards the toe (probably about a quarter of the diameter of the ball over). Would there be any reason not to putt the ball like that.

How's your putter weighted? Especially if it's heel-toe, you won't be hitting the sweet spot as solidly and it may throw off your distances a little. Does it have arced grooves? I've heard people complain that grooves like C-grooves on Yes! putters will put light amounts of side-spin on the ball if hit off-center; no idea if that's true or not. Other than those two reasons, which might actually effect the raw physics of performance, having the ball off-center might mess up your alignment. You may have one good day, but in the long run it may play tricks with your mental alignment. No idea what your putter is like or what type of person you are when it comes to alignment, that is definitely an issue of individual preference. But... Why would you want to line up with the ball off center like that? If you did hit it better, it was probably a mental thing, since I don't see why it would enhance your swing. What specifically did you think went better with your putting that this different setup improved?

The sweet spot of your putter might be slightly toe bias. If it is, you'd be far better served hitting it out there. Finding your putter's sweet spot.

the sweet spot on my anser is a little towards the toe.  if you're rolling it on-line like that then just go with it.
