downloaded an app on my android and lined up my adress shaft angle at 44degrees and then frame by frame untill my down swing was at the impact position and it was at 49degrees

is the angle of the club from address through the swing the reason for my nasty god awful slice?

You've changed the lie angle of your club, your club face can be square to your target but because your shaft is more upright your effectively pointing the sweet spot to the right of the target, this will be one of the reasons your ball will go to the right

Key there being "one of the reasons." It might add a bit of slice, but it won't make it, as you say, "nasty god awful."
