I went kind of "non-conventional" as well. I use my PW for literally everything inside of 120. I have played around with many different ball positions, stances, grips and opening/closing the face. I'm by no means, obviously, as good as Phil Mickelson but I've watched his game a lot - as well as his tutorials and DVDs. I just put in a lot of time working on the chipping/pitching and didn't care for the feel I had with a LW. I have to admit though, sometimes when the ball is sitting up in the rough, I kind of get too far under the ball with such an open faced PW. I'm comfortable with just PW/SW though as they are the only wedges that I currently use. I never bump/run with 7/8/9i though. I'm too afraid of that skull shot that shoots off the back of the green and sets me up with a farther shot than I started with.

Edit:  I take that back. I will use my SW with a very high loft/backspin shot when I'm set up in the fairway between 30-60 yards. So anything from 120 yards to 70 yards, and then 20 yards to fringe I will use my PW. The 30-60 yards is where the SW is my best friend.

Something I've tried lately on the bump and run shot around the green is to use my 23 degree hybrid. You need to practice this to get comfortable because the ball will jump off the club face, but it's pretty reliable if you want to keep it on the ground - easier to make solid contact than bumping a 7 or 8 iron. Prefer to chip with my sand wedge when I need some height - normally use the lob wedge sparingly, when I need to pop it up quickly, short sided, etc.

I have taken the wedges out of the bag a while back but I found that I really needed the "wedge touch" at least 4-5 times a round (excluding sand traps).

I found the wedges necessary to make shorter shots over water, sand, or when the green was elevated and I needed to get the ball up and have a relatively

soft landing.

However, I do utilize my 8 and 9 irons to chip an run with around the green when the approach to the green is somewhat flat (unobstructed).

I did watch a couple of videos Golf With AJ and really learned a lot about playing the 8 and 9 iron around the green.

I have a 48, 52 & 56, matched with my irons Callaway x24-hot. I have a 48, 52 & 56 matched with my irons PowerBilt N7s I have some Callaway X forged 48, 52 grind mac daddy & 58......tried them, but they were way shorter than my matched wedges. I have a Vokey 58 that sits in the garage I have a 1980s Wilson R90 56 wedge. Somehow I prefer the wedges matched to my irons.

Until 2008 I played with a PW and a SW. The irons were Ping Eye2 clones... PW was 50* and SW 56*.

With new PWs 45* or 46*, I got a GW to bridge the distance gap.

Focus, connect and follow through!
