i was just practicing my pitch shots from 80 yards and everything was going great until i shanked one. Then i shanked a couple and then at the end i couldnt stop shanking the ball. The ball would shoot off to the right. Even if i stood further away from the ball i kept on shanking.  Is this an alignment or timing issue?  Any good drills to stop this. Thannks

just an observation more than a solution, but I've never seen a bad golfer shank...so ya got that goin for ya!!  most poor golfers hit it more on the toe.

when I shank I usually am holding the angle OK and coming into the ball on an OK plane but my hands seem to move a bit outward...doesnt take much, only a inch or two.  usually when I am not warmed up and my upper body is tight, causes my hands to wander a bit outside. what ya need to resist doing is falling away from the ball as a fix.

As a short term fix I address the ball more out towards the toe and focus on swinging down into the ball to keep my angle from shallowing out.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Hey man, I have many post on this so it will sound like a broken record to many. Hinge and Hold on any shot inside 80 yards, that's all I do. Heck, I can hinge and a hold a flop shot!

HINGE AND HOLD AND FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING HOLY... KEEP YOUR WEIGHT FORWARD!!!

Hinge and hold doesn't work for pitching. It's a chipping motion. Hinge and hold does not expose the bounce.

Look up the "quickie pitching" thread.

If your shanking your pitches i find its the following issues.

1) your standing to close to the ball

2) your not rotating your body, its not just hand movement

3) your butt gets closer to the ball in the downswing, and your club moves outside more bringing the hozel into play

Pitching for me, make sure you rotate your shoulders, and make sure you have most of your weight on your left side. I like Utley's concept of rotating around your left leg, using it as a pivot (for right handed players). This gets your body into the shot, takes alot of the hands out of it, and it keeps your weight forward.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
