It seems the only time I can put backspin is out of the sand, I have tried everything, watched tons of vids how to do it, high spin wedges, soft balls, hitting it to a slope on the green, just won't happen. Any tips?

Post a swing video so some of the more experienced guys can give you some swing pointers.

Chipping-Pitching Technique for Back Spin for a Right Hander

Use a urethane ball, Use a urethane ball, use a urethane ball

(yes, that means the expensive ones - but you can find them on specials)

1. Keep your weight on your front foot throughout the swing

2. Mini-Swing (that means use your lower body, not a handsy swing)

3. Less wrist break is lower ball flight, more wrist break is higher flight

4. Less swing but more gradual speed into the ball (speed will get you more spin)

5. Throw that right elbow at the ball (compress the ball)

6. Straighten that right arm through the swing and don't release the club (don't turn it over), and (important), keep your hands in front of the clubhead.

7. Keep your back to the ball for as long as possible (prevents hosel rockets)

8. Keep your hips turning (finish the swing)

9. Use a urethane ball

Hit the ball before the ground - clean contact
