I remember Golf Magazine's Golf Ball Test a few years back - it was one of the best ball tests I have ever seen. Anyway, I remember being really impressed with the TM TP black. It had long distance and great spin all based on a 90mph test swing. Anyway, I was curious if anyone knew which TP black model was tested? I know there have been many iterations of this ball, LDP, Tour preferred, tour performance, etc and I am trying to figure out which model was actually tested? I also need to know if its sold still and if so where? So, I want to know what model was tested and if its still in production?

I'm pretty sure there have only been two versions of the TP Black. The first was the TaylorMade TP Black, and the second was the TaylorMae TP Black LDP. In both instances, TP stands for Tour Preferred. The first one, the TP Black: And the second, the TP Black LDP: For two reasons, I'm almost positive that the tested one was the original. First off, they don't reference LDP anywhere, just calling the ball the TP Black. Secondly, that test came out in 2008 (look in light-colored print at the bottom), which I'm pretty sure is before the LDP came out. Third, the LDP and the original ball are extremely similar. LDP was simply a different dimple pattern (though I believe they also changed around which of the red and black was the high spin and which was low spin). The balls are very similar. To answer your last question, some places do still sell the TP Black LDP for about $30, and many have two for $55 deals or better. Here are two example: http://www.golfgalaxy.com/TaylorMade-TP-Black-Golf-Balls---12-pack/PAPMICHOMCFADKFG/Product http://www.amazon.com/TaylorMade-TP-Black-LDP/dp/B00155X2CC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid;=1314668344&sr;=8-1

Walmart also sells the TP Black and Red.

Are you sure they sell the TP Red? I've never seen the Red there. And I thought the Reds were discontinued (presumably to avoid conflict with the Penta).

I haven't seen the Reds since the Penta came out. Not really sure why, though your presumption sounds plausible.

    • Okay, I had these two assumptions wrong. That would be my premise for hitting driver. I promise I'm not high.. lol. Fair enough.

    • Wider than most fairways, yes (thus why I don't hit 100% of my fairways), but most holes I play have 65+ yds between hazards (or areas where I can't easily advance my ball to nGIR) so the majority of the time when I hit driver I am able to find it and have a reasonable look at the green.  That would not necessarily be the case on this hole, especially because a mishit driver brings those left trees into play.   PGA Tour players average 2.82 strokes to hole out from 40yds in the bunker and 3.15 strokes to hole out from 60yds in the bunker.  2.82 strokes to hole out from the fairway is like 110yds and 3.15 strokes to hole out from the fairway is like 190yds.  Now granted I would only have that 50yd bunker shot 1/3 of the time, but it's still a VERY difficult shot especially for amateurs.   Haha trust me I love chasing birdies, but I'm averaging 2.78 birdies per round this year so that's not my issue, I need to make less bogies (5.2 per round) and doubles (0.42 per round)
    • Vishal, what are you doing here? PGA Tour players are about 65 yards wide, often 70. Huh? A 50-yard bunker shot is one of the toughest shots in golf. Are you okay? 🤣
    • Day 608, July 3, 2024 Played 18 holes with a student. White tees. Wasn't really working on my stuff, but hit some really good shots. Drove 16 to the pin-high rough 3" from the fringe. Hit some tremendous long irons.
