Hi, I just started playing golf in June, and I took my 2nd lesson today off a mat, and I practiced on grass afterwards and seemed to be taking a divot before even hitting the ball. I only hit about 25% of the shots well. Btw, this problem was only with my irons. I was hitting my hybrid, wood and driver great. What would cause me to hit the ground before the ball? Thanks in advance.

Also, let me know what other information you need.

Several things can cause you to hit the ground before the ball with irons including your right shoulder dipping down on the downswing, standing too close to the ball, and playing the ball too far forward in your stance.  Since you are hitting your driver, wood, and hybrid well, it tells me you are likely playing the ball too far forward in your stance assuming your swing plane is not an issue as well.

Always changing:

Driver: Cobra S2/Nike VR Pro 10.5º

Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour 4-9i

Hybrid: Titleist 910H 19º & 21º

Wood: TaylorMade R11 3w

Putter: Odyssey White Hot

Wedges: Titleist Vokeys - 48º, 54º, 62º

First round: February 2011

Alright thanks I was going to ask if I should play it further back in my stance. I appreciate the feedback :)

Id agree it sounds like the ball is too far back in your stance.  With irons you want to play the ball in the middle of your stance to promote hitting down on the ball.  With short and mid irons you always want to hit down on the ball.

In most cases with a new player fat shots are caused by poor or non-existent weight transfer.  If you just started playing get some lessons before you ingrain bad habits.

No one has mentioned flipping yet as a possible cause, so I will.  In fact I would venture to say that flipping might be the most likely cause of fat (and/or thin) shots.

+1 flipping and weight transfer are the most common.

I hit way too many fat shots too - biggest help for me is to concentrate on not dropping the right shoulder.     If I concentrate on that & keeping my head centered & weight shift forward ... I try to reinforce those three things with every iron shot - alot to concentrate on at once, but it's improving (slowly) through repitition.   Nothing good about fat shots - my clubs sometimes look like gardening tools after a round

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
