Tomorrow if all goes well, I am making a trip down to Golfsmith. I have been saving up for a new set of irons to finish up my set. I usually shoot right at about 100. My approach game has been killing me seeing as I have been playing with an old set of junior irons. Once I get too close for my 3 hybrid, I'm screwed and I never get on the green. I have been looking around and seen that the G series by Ping is popular. Some other sets I have looked into are the Machspeed Irons, Cg7, R7, and S2 and S3. I would love to see JPX 800s at my price range, but I think they are going to be a little over. I feel most comfortable with cavity backs. Does anybody use or have used any sets that would be about 300 dollars now used at a store? BTW I am left handed, and I'm sorry my wording doesn't sound great but I'm mid essay on a paper on genetically modified food :/ so my brain's a little shot.

Don't know about used, but most chains have new sets (Dicks, Golf Galaxy, Edwin Watts) of the following for at or under $300:

*Callaway x-20 ($199)

*Adams A7 ($299)

*Adams A4r ($199)

*Cleveland TA7 ($299)

*Wilson Di9 (Might be $199 or $299)

*Wilson Ci7 ($199, online only)

*Burner 1.0 (Might be $349 or $399)

That's what I can remember off the top of my head, prices for the southeast US. I was very close to getting one of the Adams sets, quality clubs for a great price.

Used sets can vary from store to store, even for chains. I've seen different sets at each one I visit.

The Dick's closest to me only has burner HT's at about that, which arent too bad, Being lefty limits my chances because irons like the Warbirds only come in right handed

The 1.0's Burner are a great iron! I bought a set new last Spring from Dick's. Cleveland makes a helluva of iron as well.

You could get some Callaway X20s used. Try them out - not everyone likes the Uniflex shaft. X20 in graphite might run above $300.

Look at the bigger stores - one shop might not have it, but if it's in the supply chain, they can get it for you.

Vanpooten~I'm in North Carolina too, but I'm north of Raleigh, and where can you find X 20s for 199??? Thats an incredible deal. I can only find them in the $400 dollar range. I am also hoping that the Burner 1.0s will drop due to RBZ irons coming out.

WuTiger~Why have people not liked the uniflex shafts? Aren't they True Temper like a lot of other companies irons? EDIT: Ok just looked it up and it is a Callaway uniflex shaft. Have you used it?

I suggest you find what you want (almost regardless of price) and then look for a good used deal on eBay. If you buy used and from a reputable seller, you can get deals. Not "too good to be true" deals but certainly sets near $300 if you watch a bunch of auctions. I wanted a set of Mizuno MP 53 and most auctions were closing near $450. I got a 5-PW set for under $320 delivered. Excellent shape. I used an auction sniper program and within about two weeks, I'd landed my margin.

I'm guessing the JPX 800's will usually auction for well over $300 because they are all pretty new. As a lefty, you'll have less auctions to bid on but less competition so you might steal a set.

As a fellow lefty, here are a few links to take a look at;

3balls has a set of Like New  TaylorMade TP MC's for $361.12 - http://www.3balls.com/product-productid/386420/TAYLORMADE-MENS-TOUR-PREFERRED-MC-IRONS-LH-USED

RockBottom has a new set of Callaway 2007 X-Forged for $299.00 - http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/callaway-golf-left-handed-2007-x-forged-irons-set.html

Global Golf has an open box set of TaylorMade R9 4-PW, AW for $374.99 - http://www.globalgolf.com/product/golfclub.aspx?pid=1016062&dxt;=1&gd;=2&cdt;=15

Global golf also has some Titleist AP1's for around $300 - $350

Dallas Golf has new Nike Victory Red Split Cavity 3-PW in regular and stiff flex for $279 - http://www.dallasgolf.com/p-8592-new-nike-victory-red-split-cavity-3-pw-irons-lh-stiff.aspx

Deals are out there for lefties just need to know where to look.  3Balls had a set of JPX-800's that they just sold for $350 - so if you keep an eye on their used clubs you may find one.  I've bought clubs from all these places so no worries about them selling fakes or not standing behind their products.  Good Luck!

Wow guys thanks for all the feedback, I have been very impressed with the SandTrap Community

Cleveland A7's look pretty cool, and I've seen good reviews, I want to feel them

I'm amazed Dallas Golf is legit for how cheap their prices are

I've been gunshy about Ebay because of all the stories I have seen about fakes, I'd be furious if I got duped like that, and Rusty, whats an auction sniper program? I've never heard of it.

You're welcome, TST is a great place and I've learned a lot since joining.  While I'm not saying there aren't any I doubt you will see many fake lefty clubs.  We make up only about 10% of the market so they it's not really worth it for them to invest the time and money to create fakes for us.  I've bought from Dallas Golf and they are legit, pretty much unless it's an accident or oversight you can trust the top eBay sellers that have United States addresses.  Most of the places like Dallas Golf buy bulk quanitities of older clubs at steep discounts which is why they are so cheap.  You can also check out Callaway Preowned as they run specials with discounts up to 40% on used clubs.

I've never used one, but I'm pretty sure the auction snipers are designed to place a winning bid at the last possible second so you get the last bid and those bidding against you don't have time to bid higher if they are bidding live.

I played X20s with Uniflex for about 18 months. Uniflex has been called a "firm" regular, and was designed to fit about 70 percent of males golfers. Marketing info says the flex adjusts according to your swingspeed on a given shot. Not all club designers like it, including Ralph Maltby. He said it was between Regular and Stiff, rather than adjusting.  While it's an OK shaft for the average golfer, it's probably not the ideal shaft for that many people.

Personally, I thought Unfilex was an OK shaft, but I like the PX 5.0 on my X20 Tours better. Unflex is variable weight - 106 to 121 grams in X20 - and has a midkick and low torque (it won't balloon the ball if you have medium swingspeed).

Some of the harsh remarks about Uniflex have a purist ring to them, similar to comments like "...I couldn't break 90 with XYZ irons because of the thick topline ..."

Callaway now puts Uniflex as stock on its RazR X irons. Other companies have a Uniflex variant as stock on certain GI iron models. Cleveland offers both steel and graphite Uniflex on the TA7. (Haven't seen graphite Uniflex until recently). Wilson Staff Ci9 model available with Uniflex. (From what I understand, True Temper makes most of the Uniflex shafts, often with a particular shaft tag for different club manufacturers such as Callaway)

Check around next time you go to a golf shop.

I bought a NEW set of Taylor Made Burner Plus irons this time last year - can't say enough good about them ... they're great game improvement cavity backed clubs - took me from shooting in the 110's to consistently in the high 80's low 90s.     Best part is that they are selling for $299 NEW everywhere now ($100 less than what I paid for them).

My swing is still in its infancy, I really dont have a "style" yet, so I'll adjust to whatever I get, and WuTiger I try to stay away from stiffer shafts because I'm 16 5 ft 6 105 pounds haha, I get decent swing speed, just not great power, but I will definitely check them out when I go this weekend

Inthehole~I have seen them online but I have heard that they are really long lengthwise, does that affect your accuracy at all?

Thanks

Hmmm - I haven't heard that.     I can tell you I am very conscious about club length - I cut my driver & 3w down a bit so I can make more consistent contact - never had a problem with the Burner Plus irons being too long & never had to alter them (I'm 5'11" & they fit me about right).    They really have a solid feel - the cavity backs really work well in the long irons especially - the 4i is my favorite club - feels like buttah when you catch it right with a nice penetrating flight.

They are a bit longer than most irons, and the lofts are pretty strong. Whether or not they feel long depends on your reference, of course. If you go from classic Wilson blades to Burners, you'll probably notice it. But if you usually play irons similar to Burners, you might not notice a difference (because there might not be much of one. They also alter the lie angle to fit people better when they add length.

OP the price on the x20's I have is fuzzy, it could be $299 but what I do know is that Edwin Watts had a sale on the Callaway X line irons, whether it was the x20 or x18, for under or at $299. Sorry it's all off memory!

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
