Random Fact About Sam Snead

Quick little tidbit of information I came across today: Sam Snead is the only man to ever win an LPGA event. In 1962 he won the Royal Poinciana Invitational, which was played on the par-three Palm Beach Golf Club. He beat 14 LPGA golfers by five strokes over 72 holes. Maybe people already knew that, but I just thought it was cool. ;-)

This was news to me as well.  However, I think Sam Snead must have been some kind of amazing athlete.  I heard that as a senior golfer, he could still jump up and put his foot on the ceiling.  I think he also was one the first to be able to play a fade or draw depending on how he felt warming up.  Supposedly he would play one shape of shot till it changed, then switch to the other.  Remember, during Snead's time the golf ball was very different and virtually no one could count on a straight shot.  Pretty much every shot was expected to curve a lot more than today, that was a key aspect of how golf was played.

It is interesting, but I was just having a bit of fun with you.  I'd be interesting to know the pulse of the golf community on the topic at that time.  Were the LPGA members happy that he was bringing attention to their event? Did some guys scoff at it?

I saw him playing Bob Hope on Celebrity Golf on the Golf Channel.  He hit every drive down the middle at least 250 and stuck quite a few irons inside 15 feet and had a string of birdies.  It was a great display of golf. The guy had serious tempo.

The Palm Beach Par 3 is right on the Atlantic and always has serious wind. It's a fun track, but no pushover.

I aced the 8th hole at Palm Beach Golf Club in 1991. So I beat (or at worse tied) the entire field on that hole.

I think that's cool.

Never heard that before. Looking it up, I see he finished 3rd in it the previous year, and it only ran those two years. Only 15 golfers in the field. I thought the LPGA was weak today, but it must have really sucked back then. Sam was without a doubt the greatest Jewish golfer ever. For a Bromo-Seltzer commercial, he said, "I play golf for a living, so I can't afford to be sick on the Day of Atonement."
