SouthEast golfers, how are the greens in your area?

Just wondering, thinking maybe I'm spoiled.  At my home course, and with the nice weather we've had all summer, the Champion Bermuda greens are in excellent condition.  I was under the impression that Champion Bermuda was hard to maintain in the winter because they were designed to be heat resistant, which is why my course put them in about 6 years ago.  These greens are actually near perfect, and have been very good throughout the limited winter we have had here in North Carolina.

I have played 3 other courses in the past 2 weeks, and all of their greens were complete crap.  Played today at Sandy Ridge Country Club in Dunn, NC and the greens were the worse I have seen.  The other 2 courses here in the same area that I've played were similar, although not quite that bad.

Am I spoiled by good greens for this time of year, or did I just have bad luck picking 3 courses in a row that the greens were crap?  It just seems odd that greens that are supposed to be bad in the winter are better than everyone else's.

Champion is a great grass for this part of the country.  I played a bunch at a course called Harbor Pointe near New Bern NC during the winter a few years back while my mother in law was still living.  That course had the fastest, purest "brown" greens I had ever seen.  They were always nice in the summer and I asked the Pro Shop folks how they were so nice when they were dormant.  They told me that all they did was let the grass grow out just a little before it started to go dormant and then just rolled the footprints out every other day.  It was amazing to me how smooth and pure a dormant grass could putt when taken care of properly.  No overseeding, no "painting", just rolled out.

My home course is switching to CHampion this summer after having had bent grass for the past 12 or 13  years.  While I hate that we'll be closed for 6 - 8 weeks while I am not teaching this summer, maintained properly, it'll be a good move for us.  The bentis dying out and not growing back in now that it has some age on it.
