hey guys. i had my first highschool match today. i played with some great guys and had a good time. Im not sure how it works in other places, but how we play is 5 people get chosen from the team to play. those players are ranked from best to last (1-5). then the 1 player plays the 1 player from the other school and so on. i am number 5 on the team so i played the number 5 from the other school. the person i played wasnt as good as me so i won every hole. anyway we won the match and i had a great time.

Sounds like fun,

I hope to try out for my high school team next year, but I will have to make Varsity.

I hope in a year I can bring my nine over par on a 9 hole par 3 down to high school level (I just recently started playing again after a five year break).

Is high school level competition high?

What did you score on the entire course? How many under par?

When I was in high school each team brought 8 players, and 1 was matched with 1, 2 with 2, 3 with 3, etc. When we did match play every score counted, but in stroke play only the top 6 did. Congrats on the victory.
Is high school level competition high?
That really depends on the school (each school has different expectations), the state, and the division level. When I played it was pretty competitive, but some teams weren't at all.

where i live everyone is cool so competition isnt that high. however some schools who have a reputation and a win streak are competitive. we play 9 holes and if you win 5 then you win your match against the other guy. i won the first 5, and i had to hand my card in quick so i didnt have time to check. however i had bogeys and a couple pars on most of the holes. mostly bogeyed the par 4's and par'd the par 3's

In my area, 6 people went to matches, top 4 counted.  We never did any match play competitions, that seems like it would've been a blast and the seeding of players would actually matter then.  When I played in high school the team I played on wasn't all that competitive to make the team.  There were only like 20-30 people who showed up for tryouts and something like 15 made the team as either Varsity or JV.

There were two schools in my area where all the kids grew up in country clubs and those two teams were amazing.  I played varsity at my school and could only shoot in the mid-80's on my best day.  At those two schools, everyone on the varsity team shot par or slightly worse.  Those schools had something like 80 people or more try out for the team every year, so the competition was much much higher.  That really just depends on where you live.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
