If you actually support the idea of penalizing ANGC, financially or otherwise, unless they start to allow women members and/or take on more minority members simply for the idea of taking on more minority members, then you should probably sell whatever clubs you have, buy a tent, and head off to the nearest occupy protest.

I can't tell you how generous it is for you to take time away from your warm blooded American activities, and give advice to a dirty commie hippie like me.

Comments like this add nothing to the conversation and need to stop, dude. Knock it off. Just argue your opinion and quote accurately.

How can you possibly say they have "zip, zilch, nada" to do with it?  I see very little distinction between "holding" and "sanctioning" with respect to the discrimnatory policies of the club.  Go to the PGA Tour website and tell me they have nothing to do with this event.

If they really want "zip, zero, zilch" to do with it they should take it off their tour.  These types of arguments are always made to justify continuing bad practices.

I laid out the events as they happened. It is up to you if you choose to believe that it was just a coincidence that ANGC chose to invite its first black member in the aftermath of the Shoal Creek controversy.

Thanks. For the added info too.

So if The Masters isn't run by the PGA Tour, or more accurately, run by ANGC, then there's no pressure for them to do, well, anything to capitulate.

If you think they're doing anything to "hold" this event, you don't know how it all works.

They "sanction" the event... just like the European Tour. So tell me - what's the European Tour doing to "hold" this event.

BIG BIG difference between an event that's simply "sanctioned" versus a standard PGA Tour event in terms of PGA Tour involvement. The majors are "sanctioned" simply so that money won on them, and OWGR points, can count towards the player's official money list, exemption status, etc.

LOL, where's Alex Miceli when you need him? Watching Billy Payne refuse to answer questions about ANGC's men-only policy is EXACTLY like watching Tiger refusing to talk about Haney's book.

Only they can say how much pressure they feel. However, IMO it is an amazing coincidence that they admitted their first black member immediately after the Shoal Creek controversy, and approximately concurrently with the announcement from the PGA of America, PGA Tour, and USGA that no further championships would be held at clubs that discriminated on the basis of race.

It sounded like he just referred to her as a "named candidate".....interesting.

Not sure what you're referring to. All I heard was pure stonewall. Can you give the quote in context?

Someone pressed him a second time for more info and he replied that he wouldn't for two reasons.  The second being that they especially don't discuss private matters when reffering to a named candidate.

Not sure if he's referring to their own naming of a candidate or the press naming, but I thought it was an interesting choice of words.

I found it. Here's the exchange: Q. Is it possible to elaborate further on why Membership for Mrs. Rometty wouldn't be considered, just to give us a little more spiel on that. CHAIRMAN PAYNE: I guess two reasons: One, we don't talk about our private deliberations. No. 2, we especially don't talk about it when a named candidate is a part of the question. So you're right, his use of "candidate" rather than, say, "dame," is intriguing. I have no idea whether it's significant. I do find it significant that he didn't challenge any of the reporters whose questions implied that ANGC has no female members. I don't know why he would play it that cute if they had already admitted one. They certainly didn't keep it a secret when they admitted their first black member.

I found this part interesting -

Quote:

Because the secrecy level at Augusta National is so high, there could already be a female member that nobody knows about. Though members are visible during the Masters because of their iconic green jackets, not every member is in attendance this week.

So, on the one hand there's the 'old fogeys' perception, but on the other, it's a closely guarded secret as to who is a member. For all we know, they could have female members. And if that's the case, kudos for Payne for not saying hey, we got female members (if true). The club's attitude is, that's nobody's business but ours.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
