Hey everyone,

I have decided that this Saturday or Sunday I am going to head out to a local golf course for a super twilight tee time.

Spurred on by my recent +4 at the local par 3 I think I will be able to hold my own out on a full course.

I am so excited, I can't wait to see how I do.

Does anyone have any advice for me for my first time out?

Thanks,

Sebastian

Just go have fun and don't get intimidated, if you need to just pickup your ball.  If you shot a +4 at a par 3 I doubt you will even need to do that though ;)

First, congratulations on the +4. Second, go have fun. My advice: pick an amount over par (2x par is a common one here) after which you'll pick up on a hole. This will keep your pace going and keep one hole from frustrating you your first time out. Which course are you playing, and which par-3 course did you get the +4 on?

I will go to the Westlake Golf Course or if I can't get a time I will try for the Los Robles Greens.

The course I got my +4 on was Sinaloa Golf Course.

Good advice on when to pick the ball up.

I don't want to feel rushed and I don't want to be the slowpoke holding people up.

I did the same thing when I was new.  I shot a 34 (par 31) executive course, so I ventured out to a championship 18-hole soon afterwards.  It was a blast and I shot a 69...on the front.  Once I calmed down, I shot a 58 on the back.  Of course, it probably didn't help that I played Poppy Hills from the blue tees (6500 yards, 73.0 CR / 141 slope).  The only advice I can give you is to just enjoy the round regardless of the outcome.  Also, bring plenty of ammo (golf balls) you don't mind losing just in case.  My bud that played with me that day (who was just as new as I was) brought two dozen golf balls.  He ran out by the 13th hole.

I just got back from my adventure on the course and oh was it fun!

I played the full 18 but didn't keep score to keep the pressure down (that was a mistake, now I want to know what I shot!).

My iron shots were solid because of my practice on the par 3's.

The only place that I really struggled was from the tee.  I thought I had my drives pretty straight beforehand but god was I wrong.

Almost every single one sliced out of play!

I am signing up for lessons before the next time I head out for sure.

Still had a great time though,

Not having a wedge other than a pitching wedge seemed to hurt me around the green as well.

    • I would like to amend my original comment on the new Maxfli irons. Yes, $800 for forged irons is a pretty good price and they do feel good BUT...I have since found out that $800 is only for off the shelf, standard issue clubs with standard lengths, lofts, lies and shafts. Any change made from stock results in huge up-charges so that the final price ends up pretty much the same as similar forged irons from any of the major manufacturers.
    • These were almost all included on the list of Clarifications or revised Model Local Rules released just a few days ago.  I'm pretty sure the first 3 are brand new MLRs (Moved/Wrong Place, Embedded Ball in someone else's pitch mark, Internal OB applies only to tee shot) that the PGA Tour is choosing to use.  The 16.1 Rule (relief near a Putting Green) was revised allowed a Committee to give relief for more than just Immoveable Obstructions, microphone holes would be classed as GUR (a hole made by the maintenance staff).  The replacement club rule was available before, the E-3 (Lift Clean and Place distance) could have been defined as "one scorecard" before, they're just a change in how the PGA choices. Here are the January 1 Clarifications and revised MLRs https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/clarifications-of-the-rules-of-golf.html#cp
