Swing plane or open club face?

I know many people will say; if you consistently slice the ball you probably have a problem with both.

In trying to adapt to my new irons I've suddenly started slicing the crap out of my driver and 3 wood?....What gives?

Path is left. Very very very very few slicers have a clubface pointing right of the target at impact (right-handed golfers).

Try aiming right of your target with your feet, hips and shoulders with your driver. This should help promote and outward path on your down swing which should help you hit a straighter drive - and perhaps find a right to left or draw ball flight.

Whoa...so you're saying most slicers don't have the club face open at impact?

Play a little reverse psychology  with myself?

Interesting advice...I'll definitely try it...thanks!

Nope, they don't.

99% of all slicers (righties) have a clubface pointing at or left of the target at impact. Their path is simply farther left ("outside in") than the clubface.

We've asked several instructors who have a combined history of over 500 years of teaching and their answers to the question "how many slicers do you know that regularly start the ball right of the target" have been to say things like "I can count them on one hand" or "None. Well, there was this one guy once..." or things like that.

In my hay days of slicing, I did have a problem with open clubface combined with out-in path at times. The ball would start right and just rocket deeper into the woods. Normally I would be able to square up the clubface though and hit a pull-fade. Or if I was lucky, close it a little and actually end up where I thought I was aiming. Erik is right on que here. Outside in path is the reason for near everyone who slices. If you have a square or in-out path, you can still hit the occasional push-fade with an open clubface, but you won't hit the banana slices that starts at the target or left of it and ends up in the right rough. Clubface dictates 70-90% of the initial starting direction of the ball. Path determines which way the ball curves, difference in path and clubface angle determine the amount of sidespin. Most guys that slice will figure out that they have to close the clubface. Which means that a push-fade would become a straight shot or even a draw if you got the clubface aligned properly at impact. For the 99% with out-in path, the ball would still have a left to right ball flight. You can also throw in the occasional pull and pull-hook. You can hardly play golf with an out-in path and open clubface. The ball would go left and more left every single time.

I'm gonna say, Weight stays too far back through the down swing. A take away outside the target line. Early relase.

What are some drills I can use that will start to promote more of an in-out swing?

Stand closer to ball?

Keep hands closer to body during takeaway?

Thanks for all the insight and advice guys...I greatly appreciate it.

I took some lessons this winter and what helped me was this 2x4 drill the instructor taught me to straighten out my back swing and come back down the swing plane straight. simply put a 2x4 behind your club and push it straight back it helps build muscle memory and don't hinge your wrists untill the shaft is parallel to the ground

That sounds pretty cool!

I'll give it a go for sure.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
