I went from a deep face 3 wood to a shallow face one in an effort to hit it from the fairway. I am still having trouble catching it clean. My hits are either fat or thin. I am not sure of where to line the ball up, and that plus the fact that I worry about making clean contact without the ball on a tee makes this the hardest shot for me. Any tips at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go play a shorter course, and keep the driver in the bag. If you hit the 3W about 20 times during the round - off the tee and off the fairway - you will start to get the feel of the club.

I did this during a spring scramble because my driver needed a repair, and I was hitting it quite well by the back 9.

A golf lesson was going on 15 feet from me Monday, and the pro told the golfer to try for more of a sweep on the longer clubs. Pro told him that mix of fat-thin was caused by him chopping down on the ball rather than sweeping through it. Haven't seen you swing, so I don't know for sure. Or, possibly it's ball position.

If this 3W is a long-time problem, you might take a golf lesson. Or, if you have worked with a pro in the past, he might give you a quick tweak lesson on 3W for free.

Focus, connect and follow through!

i had the same problem and still working through it, i could kill the ball out of the rough but not so much off the fairway. My solution to the problem was moving the ball up in my stance maybe a foot or two behind my front leg so i would like the post above said i would sweep the ball and forced my self to keep my head down so i would not top it. Since i moved the ball up i noticed good improvement on the range, since that is all i have done since i made the change. I would recommend going to the range and giving it a try. Hope this helped

    • Feeling a tiny bit more upright, more width, and a slightly faster tempo. Still not enough confidence to bring a square face set up to the course but will get there one day. Interestingly, it didn't take this long to bring the driver square set up to the course. Its is like rehabbing my ankle all over again. Slow, painful and wanting for patience. I guess this is how you fill this bucket - one spoonful at a time.
