So after a sleepless night trying to figure out why ive suddenly started shanking and fatting the crap out the ball

Ive wondered if im getting to armsy at the top and casting the club,......leaving the face well open and catching it fat?

something i need to try down the range for sure but going through my head i definately think ive tried to manipulate my arms to much

"Sleepless night", its not just me!  I don't have any cures for what ails you, not enough information for someone of my skills to guess.

I recently went from the best ball striking of my life to a similar situation.  In the beginning of the year I was hitting into a net in the shop of my business.  That is an interesting exercise.  I work on hitting it pure into the net.  When I warm up I hit little half wedges.  That sets my tempo.  Then I start hitting a short iron trying to keep tempo.  Then I move up through the clubs.  If I keep the easy tempo, 80% swing good things happen.  As soon as I increase the tempo and power to 100 or 100+ % all the things you are describing happen.

Yesterday I revisited the net.  Found my pure tempo.  It is easier to do for me if I can't see how far the ball goes.  It is all about the purity of the strike.  Low and behold I went to a range on the way home and hit 80 balls.  1 fat shot the rest are playable.

The number one thing for me to be successful is to swing within myself.  Start to swing too hard and it gets wild.  A nice relaxed tension free swing produces great results.

Good luck.

thanks bud

ive been doing more thinking at work (yes golf consumes my life, but i love it)

and i think i was trying a little bit to hard,....i also remember trying to get the weight more over my heels to avoid the shank, but realised that probably just aided it,

so next range session will be focused on:

weight on the balls of my feet, nice and central

good shoulder turn

good tempo, not trying to skin the thing

good rotation through the ball rather than hitting at it

I think what i do when i get the shankls is to try everything in the book to avoid it and simply worsen the issue, i just need to go back to basics to find teh actual issue,..which i think is my weight with my feet, and trying to leather it

Oh boy, I'm going through the same exact thing. First part of the season, I was really hitting the ball good, my irons were solid.

Then recently my last round iron play was horrible, I went to the range this past Saturday, and I couldn't hit a single shot in the center of the clubface, for an entire bucket of balls. I couldn't even hit my PW. Everything was on the toe, chunks, thins, you name it.

Then last night I went to the range again. And after 3/4 of the bucket of balls. I finally started hitting the center of the clubface, flush perfect shots again.

I started relaxing on the downswing. Before I was just too tight. My wristcock was too stiff, and impact position was too stiff. Trying to steer and square the clubface with force.

When I hit the flush shots, my wristcock felt more loose, kinda like Colin Montgomery's swing.

I need to go and practice this more, but I think I found something last night. So there's hope. Just keep experimenting on the range, you'll figure it out eventually.

yeah it comes and goes,....i take it as being an amatuer who cant practice/play as much as id like,....im currently only playing twice a month, but practicing 2-3 times a week, i can afford to hit 60 balls at the range but spent rest of my time on the pitching/putting green which is free

For me a shank can definitely happen if I jump at from the top and start the swing with the hands/arms.  Also I tend to do this when I don't take the club away low and slow enough.  Makes me really steep if I don't do this right.

I suffer from the opposite regarding swingpath and get it to shallow with a flat shoulder plane, something i have to keep an eye on

Your angle of attack gets too shallow?

No my backswing does, flat and under plane on way back,....steep and just about/slighty over plane on way down

Sorry, by steep/shallow I mean your angle of attack.  When my AoA gets steep I shank it.

Well i thought id give it two range sessions before i reported back I changed my weighting onto the balls of my feet I changed my backwswing, getting my left shoulder into the insole of my right foot to encourage a more steep shoulder plane Keeping my head down through the shot Result? Boom shanks gone,.....worst i had where a few over fades where my hands got a bit stiff But yeah, overall a very good session,....great contact, good distance Juat remembering that i need a different swing for my irons and woods,.....if i use my iron swing with my woods its banana slice city,.....but if i keep the clubhead low and straight back i pure it straight with a slight draw,...quirk of my game? Not sure, but ill ise what works i guess :)
