Jason Dufner is one of the least known players on the PGA Tour. Why not help us fellow sandtrap members gain a better appreciation for him?

I remember the first time I saw Jason Dufner's name near the top of the leaderboard in 2011 at the PGA Championship in Atlanta. Jason didn't get much camera time earlier in the week and felt uneasy when I did see him. He looked nervous. He bit his lip and waggled more than anyone I had ever seen before losing to Keegan Bradley blowing a 5 stroke lead with four holes to play.

Now, he is the talk of the tour.

So, what do you know about The Dufner?

What do I know about Dufner?  He is from Ohio, and always has a big dip in! :D  Reminds me of high school golf - when we would all be out there with a big old dip in. Hahahah... I haven't dipped in 15+yrs.

Was disappointed when he lost to Mark Wilson in the desert in '11 and when he lost to Bradley the spaz in Atlanta.

My instructor had me practice something that strongly resembles his waggle and it works.

His new wife seems very nice and unlike some other players' wives, not so fake looking.

I remember hearing of him before, but the first time he made a real impression was the 2007 U.S. Open. I'm pretty certain he was near the lead early in that event, and his name stood out to me (a golfer named "Dufner"?) so it became a sort of running joke throughout the week.

I'm envious of his right elbow position at A4. :)

I followed Dufner on the back nine at The Byron Nelson last week. Not only is he long long ( hitting par fives in 2)  he has  short game like Mickelson.

Dufner is playing incredible golf, and I agree he is the hottest golfer in the world right now.  He could be the nicest guy for all we know, but he seems too stiff walking around the course, and rarely acknowledges the fans.  Even Tiger, who gets knocked for not being fan-friendly, always tips his cap or waves his hand when the gallery applauds.  Dufner rarely does this.  I think this will not really endear him to the fans.

He just seems like 90% of the time he's not even "there".  His mind must operate on some uncharted plateau...Dufnerland.

I would much rather see a player waggle like Dufner, then stay completely static over the ball like a Westwood. I prefer to stay in motion until I'm settled in my address position and am ready to pull the trigger.

I'm definitely a fan of the way he plays the game, though. It's obviously working.

He is playing with a lot of confidence. This year, we've seen a couple of golfers perform really well in their honeymoon salad days--Hunter Mahan is another one. Duffner's body language appears to be the same whether he stripes it down the middle (happens a lot) or drives it into the rough/trees (rarely happens). I like the Dufnerland comment--Dufnerland must be in the same zipcode as "the zone"

The Waggle Man ... he's a pot bellied, long haired, skoal dipper, the likes of which we see every weekend on our local muni's ... if you saw him walking around, you'd peg him for a 30 hcp, not a +6.0.    Thats what I love about golf - you dont have to be a physical specimen to play the game at the highest level.

The real question is, how long can he keep this going? I mean he is playing lights out, and for more than a month now.

I don't think he keeps playing at this level much longer, I say he cools down in about a month, after the US Open.

If that long.

If history is any indicator, these kinds of runs don't last long.

Dufner has always been an "under the radar" type of guy, who hates the spotlight.  Was not even the number one player on Auburn's Mens golf team...

But he did make the team as a walk-on which speaks a lot to his determination.

I think he's run out of gas for the moment.  It kind of showed Sunday when he just sort of blew up.  He's won twice, gotten married, and contended until the last couple of holes in a third event all in about what,,, 5 weeks.  It has to be hard to keep it glued togther with all that going on.

Maybe, the love of a good woman is great for the golf game - .

Better waggles.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
