I keep hitting the top of my drivers, and denting them BAD I need to know why this started happening, I played great my first year but have not done any good driving, any balls the last few years, please help any pointers will be greatly appreciated thanks.

Possible problems:

  • Dipping right shoulder when trying for extra power, getting under ball
  • Teeing the ball too high

teh first 460cc drivers required you to tee the ball silly far forward and silly high,...so you hit on the upswing, high on the face

the new 460cc drivers have a much lower COG and dont require you to hit high on the face, or as far on the up swing

There is a stat somewhere that shows in general the PGA pros hit down on the ball (only fractionally mind, like 1 degree down or something)

but even when you watch them tee/adress the ball, most of them now tee the ball with only 1/4 of the ball higher than the top line of the club, not the usual 1/2 ball higher,........and most now have the ball position under their left eye,...not outside it

I pop drives sometimes,...and i hit down more than i should,.....but to cure that i did the following

1) tee the ball so at most there is 1/5th of the ball above the topline of the club,..almost guarantees i can get to under it

2) tee the ball closer to the centre of stance,.....if you have left big toe as the first point, and cnetre of stance as the other point,...ive put it halfway between the two

3) on the takeaway i concentrate on the club back straight and low,....this keeps a shallow angle of attack, and a good swing plane

these are the most generic things to try,...other than that you may need lessons to sort your swing

Steep angle of attack often leads to roofing drivers.

For now, at least, tee them lower. Then fix the swing. Oddly, the fix is to feel like they're teed higher so you REALLY have to sweep them.
