Feherty has shed some light on famous golf enthusiasts, but who are some others? I know Dan Patrick said he could have put up the same score that Rickie put up on Sunday (obviously somewhat joking but also possible maybe?) What kind of indexes, if any, do they carry? I'd say Chuck Barkley is probably the most (im)famous golfer.

List of pro athletes . There are a lot of pro athletes that show up with low single digits.  Somewhere around a 5 seems to be where you end up if you have a crap load of power (all baseball, football, hockey basket ball players) and good hand eye coordination but you can't spend 100's of hours practicing the short game.

Elway is a monster, Jeremy Roenick is real solid as well.....Roethlisberger has some game too. There's a celebrity tournament on NBC every year at Lake Tahoe (American Celebrity Golf Championship or something like that) that has the best of the best....Billy Jo Tolliver and Rick Rhoden traditionally dominate.....

Who watched the Pebble Beach Pro Am this year? Those who did had to be impressed with Tony Romo's game. Didn't he make like 5 natural birdies in one round?

I mean, it's one thing to play well at your home course with you buds but another entirely to do so on national TV at a PGA Tour event.

Ain't that right, Jerry Rice?

Yeah I knew there were quite a few pro athletes that were damn near scratch golfers. Seems like it would be relatively easy for them compared to someone else with a full-time job. What about politicians and actors? I heard Boehner is a pretty low-capper.

Posted

I heard Boehner's like an 8. Dan Quayle is close to scratch.

Among entertainers, Kenny G & Vince Gill are scratch or close to it.

Ricky experienced his first taste of playing with Tiger on the sunday prowl.      I don't fault him for blowing up...........many have done it before him and he won't be the last.    ya....some will argue it was just a bad day........ But 84???............NO, that is Tiger EFFECT..

Posting in wrong thread perhaps?

No, I mentioned Rickie's 84 in my original post. Because Dan Patrick said he could shoot an 84, which got me wondering what other famous people golf and what kind of scores they put up.

Who was the best president of all time? Gotta be Clinton or Ike? I've heard Obama's not any good, and I've never really heard whether any of the Bush's could play or not.

Ike played a lot, but he wasn't very talented......Obama SUKKS at golf too.

JFK was probably the best.  His game was a big secret though...he never wanted to be photographed playing because he was worried about his elitist image back in that era.  He had some game....probably a mid-low single digit at one point.  He could have been better if not for back pain.

Bush 1&2 next........both played to near a single digit HC at one point in their lives.  Low 10-12's maybe...   President Ford never got credit for his golf game.  He was probably the most athletic president ever to serve in the White House.  He played football at Michigan and could have gone pro..  he was also an excellent BB player in his youth.  Ford didn't play much golf until his later years.....he was a solid 12 and played to a 15-17hc well into his 80's!!   Clinton claims to be a 12 at his lowest.....I'm thinking 16-18 is more realistic based on his swing.  His full swing and short game were always lacking....Clinton was the "Mulligan In Chief" ....he didn't play real golf.

Bob was a 4..........His good buddy bing played to a 2.   I can't remember the details but I'm pretty sure Bing played in a couple british and US ams.    His son Nathanial won the US am in '81.

Dang, thanks for the history lesson, Buckeye! I'm a history major, so this stuff intrigues me. I knew JFK was an athlete and played some golf, but I didn't know he was that good. For anyone to be near scratch back in the day with the old equipment meant they had to be pretty talented.

Are you familiar with "The Walker Cup" ?   It's an AM event between the US vs--Great Britain and Ireland that has been contested every 2 years since about 1921.  It has since changed to even years, but that's besides the point!...LOL  Only the best AMS from each country qualify for the team .....both the USGA and R&A; co-officiated the event.....

The walker cup is named after George HW. Bush's grandpa (bush 41)....... George Herbert Walker. (GWB's Great-grandpa)  george herbert walker was the president of the USGA in 1920 and initiated the event....it was named in his honor.

It was because of this "Walker cup"...........that the "Ryder Cup" came into being!!!!  One more history tidbit for ya......

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
