I have played golf for a few years but just starting to get into it. I am planning to get new clubs and own just a $200 dollar complete set right now. I was wondering which hybrids or woods I should purchase. I'm thinking of getting one wood and one hybrid to start out, but need some help choosing which to get. For example: 5 wood and a 3 hybrid. I'm just deciding what number clubs to get. Thanks for the help

I mean you will get many opinions on the matter but fwiw....I would def get a 3 and possibly 4 hybrid that are mapped properly to what would have been your 3 and 4 irons. I would also probably get a 5 wood as opposed to a 3 wood so that you get help with the extra loft and have some more control. I would not think if you are a beginner that you would lose too much distance between a 3 and 5 wood so go with the easier club to hit.

Year after buying my first own iron set, I bought 3 wood and 20,5° 3 hybrid. I've been really happy with those clubs.

Maybe 5 wood might have been easier to hit and almost as long as 3 wood. I have had some inconsistency with the 3 wood.

The 3 hybrid, on the other hand, is absolutely my favorite club. I open with it all the time. I hit it around 180m vs. 200m of the 3 wood. I think the average shot with the 3 hybrid is longer, because of the large deviation with 3 wood.

Thinking my choice again now, I would probably go with 3 and 4 hybrids. It took a long time to learn to hit with the 3H from fairway and my trajectory is still quite low. I think the 4H would have been significantly easier to learn with, at least to me. Then I would add driver, 3 wood or 5 wood later.

Just my 0.02$.

I go with a 3w & 7w set up ... I've had plenty of hybrids, but find the 7w to be far easier to hit & more versatile (better off the tee, higher & more forgiving ... a hybrid would be slightly better out of the rough however).

Its really a personal decision but Id go with a 3-wood and a 3-hybrid.  That way you would have a nice driving club for tight fairways and a good club for when you have a 200+ yard shot off of the deck.

3H will also be nice on long par 3s.

I'd personally carry the longest iron I can hit and whichever hybrid(s) is necessary to bridge the yardage gap between that iron and my shortest fairway wood.

I currently carry driver 15* 3 wood 19* hybrid then 3 iron then 5 iron and I like that set up alot but I am thinking about switching to a 24* hybrid and toss the 3 iron. My hybrid is just my absolute go to on narrow fairways or must shots.

Thanks for the the feedback it helps a lot. I was thinking about buying the Taylormade burner 2.0 Hybrid/Iron set. http://m.golfgalaxy.com/TaylorMade-Mens-Burner-20-HP-HybridIrons---GraphiteSteel-3-4H-5-PW/W12BRNR20HPCOMBO/Product I was wondering if this would be a good choice for me.

I swear by Hybrids ever since I used a buddies Dunlop 4/5 from a starter set 8 years or so ago. I have a 2 and 3 now, and love them. I only hit the 2 consistently off the tee, and the three from anywhere. The 3 is my most consistent club. I've tried to screw up shots with it and can't. The 3 in my set is 1* less than my 4 iron so I take the 4 out and sub in a Gap Wedge.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
