I naturally draw the ball but had a problem with pull-draws/pull hooks that turned out to be caused by having the face shut (club face pointed at the ball) on my back swing.  I have started to let the club face open naturally on the way back and I have gotten rid of the pull-draws & -hooks.  All I have been getting lately is the 2 to 4 yard draws that I like.

Very interesting....I guess this is the normal progression...

common thing

my progression as an ameteur was a slicer, (36 handicap)

then i learned to draw it, (20 handicap)

thought more was better and it turned into a hook. (12 handicap)

started to minimise it (4 handicap)

went to a fade again (scratch)

now play all shapes (pro)

I learned the draw last year and it put me in the low 80s...this year I get the hooks....the only problem with that is my handicap went up to 20. Im trying to get back to more of a straight shot by opening my hips as early as I can which has killed my consistency. How did you go from 20 to 12 with more right to left?

Draw versus Fade has nothing to do with handicap. Though most high handicap players slice the ball. A slicer can calm down his slice, make the over the top move a slight one, and hit a nice pull fade, just as well as someone hitting a push draw, and play very good golf. A lot of pro's hit one type of shot all the time as well.

I can relate to this except i'm much less far along in my journey

Slicer (30 handicap)

learned to draw but sometimes hook (18 handicap)

That is where I am now.  Once you learn how to hit that draw and it feels so good to square your club face and not slice it I think sometimes we tend to over exaggerate it to make sure we hit a draw instead of a slice and it turns into a hook.  Also, a stiff flex driver might not promote more of a slice like you said.  With the regular flex shaft the club face might be harder to square because it's still lagging behind a little bit at impact (if you have a fast swing).  You probably just need to take your driver to the range once in a while and hit a bucket and keep working it out
