Callaway Razr X Black Irons

Was really considering them, they were very good looking clubs.  When I actually got a chance to see them I didn't even bother hitting them. The offset is huge on these clubs (compared to others in the same category).  And the wedges had very wide souls which I was not a fan of.

Callaway has challenged us golfers to keep its new seven-model iron family straight.

mosnas , any chance you hit the Razr X HLs?  It has red trim similar to the Razr X Black, but is built like the first cousin of the Diablo Edge irons.

The Black model falls between the Razr X (center of the family's universe) and Razr X Tour. Black has the same loft combinations as the Razr X, but has less offset and a slightly narrower head. The Black head design has a back weight bar from behind center to the heel. This is heel weighting which would cause the low-offset clubface to close more quickly - the benefits of offset without the look. Someone described Black it as an SGI iron with a tour setup.

I sampled the Razr X family at a regional demo day a couple of weeks ago. I hit the Razr X and the Black with a couple of different R-flex shaft combinations each, and the Razr X Tour in a couple of set stiff-flex clubs. The Razr X felt like a crisper version of the X20, which served me well for two seasons. The Black hit the ball OK, but had a somewhat strange feel to it. But, I like the idea of a low offset SGI club if it would deliver good shots.

I am redoing my bag, and just had a local fitting done on Razr X irons. I tried the Blacks again, but the Razr X delivered better launch-monitor data and better feel. Not sure whether to get the Razr X, or put lighter shafts into my X20 Tours.

No it was definately the blacks but I guess I was under the impression that it was more of a players iron that I was looking for (maybe why the offset and soul width seemed to throw me off so much)

I can't decide who is worse: Callaway (no way I can keep the razr line straight) or adams (do I want an a12, a12 OS, a12 pro, tech v3 or a XTD). They at least need to give a chart to help point you in the right direction.

It would be nice if it was a little more standardized, like cars for example.  Every company has basically one offering (or zero) in each "class."  So if every club company simply had one "players" iron, one GI and one SGI it would certainly be easier to keep it all straight.

Then again, they are trying to please everybody, and everybody is a little different.

To answer the OP's question, no, I have not hit the blacks.  I hit the two different forged models (MB and X Tour, I think?) but I didn't try any of the others.  (Really liked those 2 by the way)

Talk about confusion. Muscleback is the tough-guy model in the Razr line... somehow, Callaway forgot to put the Muscleback in the Razr family video.

+1 on this. In recent years Callaway has seemingly gone to the "flood the market" plan. Whatever happened to the new model every 2-3 years like they used too (i.e. X-12, X-14, X-16 etc etc)?

It is very confusing for golfers trying to buy new clubs.  I know when I buy hockey equipment my company has two lines of equipment.  One year they release 1 line then a year later they upgrade their new line.  It was so much easier with the X series they had tour and non tour.  And for the SGI they had their Big Bertha series.  Now all of a sudden there are so many choices and clubs are released spuratically.

I bought these but sold them after 3 rounds.I could not get youst to all the offset with the head size of an I20 iron.

I was fitted for a set of RAZR HLs (SGI irons) and had then fitted with SG-95 reg shafts. They were bent 2* up and I love the way they feel. They have really helped me improve.

I also bought a slightly used set of Black X (GI irons) and need to bend them 2* up as well. I have them for when I am a bit better, but at the range I feel I hit them as well as my HLs.

My 2 cents on all the different models.... marketing / money / profit.... isn't that why the TM marketing guru went to Callaway? Profit is good, it keeps businesses operating and allows competition

and choice to the masses.

I'm pretty sure Callaway is tightening their belts now with all the press lately.  They need to slim down a lot of their product lines in my opinion.  Just focus on making 3-4 really really good sticks.  I've yet to see one club other than the mb that is truly a beautiful club.  I really like Callaway too but they need to re group right now.

ARgh.  I bought a few irons from sets I was considering buying.  Diablo Edge, Cobra s2 Forged, and Razr Black.  And I must say that the Razr Black were the most difficult to hit.

Probable cause:  It’s not the fiddle, it’s the fiddler!!!  I have a pretty herky jerky swing and  these were left and right and then wow, that was a beautiful shot.  But unfortunately, waited too long to decide that and find a deal on  a set, so never returned them.

Interested in a 3 and 4 iron Razr Black?  Uniflex shaft, btw.

We've sold a lot of them where I work. I've even sold a set or two they're a really good iron. And on a side note I have never been a fan of Callaway.

True but in the case of Callaway, they arent doing well.  The product is as good as it ever was but there isnt the buzz surrounding it that there once was.  Thats why you are seeing them making changes internally and why so much Callaway gear is discounted.
