Wuzzup, it's been a while since my last thread so here goes............Yeah, I play the drums, rather well if I might add, I'd like to learn guitar to add to my arsenal, you know I write little songs and stuff. So this guitar love has kind of been my new thing over golf, but golf is earning its way back to the top again. Anyways, I think I should get a guitar becuz my clubs are fine, and will b provided when older. Also if I do get the guitar, do you think I should get a decent Squier in the $250 range (electric) and save money from caddiening to just spend. Or buy a cheap $100-200 dollar range Squier and maybe buy an acoustic as well. Or go all out with a Fender Telecaster or Les Paul for like $350. Sorry, that was really long.

Mmmmm, Telecaster.........

Having owned several "cheap" guitars, I'll never have another.  In the case of musical instruments, you really get what you pay for.

Oh, and good luck finding a Les Paul for $350

Epiphone. I don't got half the money for a decent Gibson. They have this limited edition Melody Maker, but for only 1 humbucker at 300? No way.

Paul Reed Smith. Although it might take you a while to save $2000.

Regardless, you aren't going to get a good guitar for less than $500. Even for a beginner.

I know all the chords but my current guitar only has the A and B strings so its hard to play. It's a Fender Starcaster silver sparkle. I've read lots of positive reviews of Squiers, but this Fender Modern Player Telecaster's got a humbucker for my rock needs, as well as a strat single coil and the classic tele twang. And you can split em. And it's in honeyburst. What more could you ask for?

If you want a good guitar you're gonna spend a 750 and up.

I'll second the PRS!  They make beautiful guitars.  You would be much better off buying a nice used guitar over a cheap new one.

Here's a start:

Tad 2 much. But thanks. I dont need an 800 dollar one. Kurt Cobain used beginner models under 200 bucks. The acoustic on Polly was 20 clams.

I own a CE 22. Got it for $800 from a dude on craigslist. Easily my most valued posession.

And Domenic... Kurt Kobain used Jaguars and Mustangs. Over $1000 each.

Fact: Kurt C obain used Mustangs as his beat up guitars on stage. That's when they were still student models and not "vintage classics" He did have one prized possesion, a '65 Jag, which Fender remade for 1000. But that's off topic.

I definitely second the good used guitar over the new cheapo. It's all about the sound and feel. I played all kinds of cheap crap for years until a new job allowed me to get a real LP, and the difference was amazing. I don't play out any more so I downsized my equipment and now I just have a Schecter C1 and an American Standard Tele. Wonderful axes.

I would look around for a good used guitar. We bought an American made Telecaster, in very good condition, for my son for $600.Just be patient. I don't know any guitar players that bought inexpensive guitars that didn't end up buying a higher end guitar. Plus, being around guitars, I have learned that some of the cheaper guitars are actually very good, but you might have to try a lot of them before you find a good one.

You can find a good used one, but you need to know what you are looking at.  If you have a guitarist friend, he may be able to walk you through it.  It is much harder to learn to play on a crappy guitar with bad action.

If you want a lower cost acoustic, that is real easy to play and to learn on, look at a Baby Taylor or Martin.  they are smaller, easy to play and can travel.  I have had many guitars over the years and really recommend finding one that is easy to play to learn on.

thanks for the advice. My mind changes with the minute. One minute I want humbuckers, then single coil, solid, then semi hollow. Good grief! I'll check ebay. Anyone have prefernces for ex. Epiphone Casiono because......grazie

What kind of music do you like as this will influence what guitar you buy, regardless of price.  I'm the opposite of you as I'm a guitarist first and am just stepping in to the world of golf.  I like rock/hard rock although I listen and play most everything.  I'm a Gibson guy and love double humbuckers.  I also do the super strats with single hum, hum/single and hum/single/single.  If you're looking for an electric, I am assuming you already have an amp or something to play the guitar thru, otherwise it will be awfully quiet.  I would take a quick look at craigslist to see what is out there used.  Take you time picking your guitar, like you probably do your clubs.  You can buy used MIM Fenders in the $300 ballpark.  You can also look at Squiers or Epi's, but know what you wanna play, then go from there.  Let us know what you decide and keep rockin.

thanks bro. I'm not sure about double humbuckers. I feel like its playing thru a stuffy nose all the time, no matter how hard I love to rock. But my my musical tastes are The Black Keys (which Im listening to right now) Brand New, Nirvana, KEvin Devine, The BEatles, etc. etc.

    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
