I'm looking to buy a new iron set but am unsure of what a good choice. I currently have a cg1 set and I like them but they r getting beat up and have broke a couple of them( and not over my knee). U would like something similure to them but would not like to spend a ton of money unless I have to to get what ok looking for. I have pretty high club head speed but I think that really only matter for the shafts. If anyone has any ideas I would welcome ur advise.

Check Rock Bottom Golf.

I love my Irons, but to me they are a personal thing. You have to feel comfortable over the ball with them. If you can't swing them with confidence, they are not the iron for you.

I hit about 15 sets before buying my current Irons a few weeks ago. It was time consuming, but also worth it.

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)
TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

Edel Forged 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64* wedges (different wedges for different courses)

Seemore Si-4 Black Nickel Putter

Do you have the original CG1 irons (circa 2004), or the new CG1s that came out in 2010?

I'm a Callaway X-series guy, but only because I have resisted the temptations of recent Cleveland CG models. I really liked the CG16, and the CG16 Tour (could hit it with lighter weight shafts; and 16Tour doesn't have overly strong lofts). Lots of shaft varieties you can load up with these two.

What is your HDCP? If you swing your driver at 105 mph but never break 90, you would probably want to stick with the CG16. Otherwise, consider the CG16 Tours.

Never had my hdcp figured or club head speed read but I pluged some numbers into online calculaters and fot a hdcp of 16 and club head speed around 115 (drive between 280-300). My driving is the worst part of my game. I usally hit my irons well.

To Echo what WU said and considering your handicap I would recommend the X series as well.  Especially if you are on a tighter budget check out Callawaypreowned for some X20's and maybe X20 tours, great club and they are good at hiding forgiveness and are a great bargain price.

What is your budget?

Having played a lot of Ping irons, I would say if you're a 16 hdcp move into the i series of irons. By now you're probably trying to shape shots, the G 15 and 20 series have way too wide soles. I'm actually playing G2 now stepping back from G5. The width difference isn't huge but it's there. My switch was primarily due to lie angle, g5 were black and the g2 are orange 2* flat.

If I had the $$$ for NEW irons, I'd be getting i20 orange dots.

Hope this helps?

Why would a 16 handicapper be trying to shape shots? A player that's barely breaking 90 has a lot more to work on before they try to "work" the ball. Generally shaping shots is something you work on when you you've reached a wall with your handicap ie: stuck at a 9 or 10 trying to get to a 5.

I'd always recommend trying a bunch of irons seeing which one fits your eye and which one you hit the best.

There's degrees of working the ball. Anyone who understands the golf swing can do a basic fade or draw. For middle HDCP players, this is most often defensive working: Hit a draw to stay away from a deep creek bed along the right side of the fairway, or hit a fade out of the right rough to bring the ball back toward the center of the fairway.

We're not talking about high draw, low fade, etc.... We're talking about a basic bend left or right to avoid danger.

If you have SGI irons, it's going to be difficult both skill-wise and equipment-wise * to hit a knockdown into the wind. Golf club engineers in a recent Golf Digest issue told SGI users how to beat the wind: Take an extra club or two and swing smoothly. The SGIs have fairly hot faces, and will get you through the wind.

* Note: Stock SGI clubs tend to have high-launch shafts.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
