So my mind works in strange ways, and today watching the US OPEN and thinking of course layout, I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a green where it was set up so the player would purposely hit over and then played the next shot back. I thought it would be kinda cool to have a 420 yard par 5 with a steep green sloping away, so the second shot would be played over the entire green for a short pitch back up.

Do some golf course design rules try and prevent this? Is it know to be faux pas and never done? Would you think it was cool or gimmicky?

Even if the green was sloped backwards, almost everyone would probably be able to lay up short (within 100 yards) and pitch on. It would probably not be worth it to shoot over the green unless short of it were extremely bad lie. You'd need something like a very deep water hazard and a lot of rough to make it worth trying to hit long. That would probably be difficult to pull off. And even if you did, the good players would probably still aim for the green and then just let the ball run off, so they'd just be chipping back on from within 10 or so yards instead of hitting full shots.

I remember some tourney a while ago players were hitting past the green on purpose to hit the stands and get a free drop. The drop zone was in a place where your ball would roll far away so players ended up placing their ball down.

It wouldnt make sense. Everyone would just go for the back of the green, especially with high spin balls and wedges.

    • Day 75 (15 Jul 25) - Wedge work today in the backyard.  Focused on setup and  dialing in on immediate target line point in front of club. This drill helps me to center on longer range targets for tee shots as well as approaches.
    • I still need to do my pieces better.  Still a little steep in the downswing. Hands could get better depth earlier in the backswing.  This shot started left of target and went left. Probably path was out, face was closed a lot.       At A5, it’s probably the best it’s been.  I need to feel more shallowing from A5 to A6. Hands need to go straight down and club needs to shallow. I need to turn. I am just way too closed here. Just trying to buy time to lower the arms. Everything stalls from time to time. Timing is highly variable. Not a big fan of the slight EE.  I am just hanging back at impact.

    • Well, on a "Bummer Note,"  I borrowed a Great Big Bertha driver, a 5 wood, and a 7 iron. I did not do very well but did shoot a 112 playing both right and left handed.   So, I decided to take a breather and play golf on my Play Station 5 and not play any real golf until the new set of clubs get her.  So, I will be back in  a week or so and bring everyone up to date.    Retired Old Man = Terry
