Has anyone ever heard of the effects of putting lip balm on the face of your driver? Evidently if you put just a little bit on your driver face it takes most of the spin off the golf ball. You hit what looks like a knuckle ball with your driver. Of course its illegal to do so I believe... because its a foreign substance. But its something crazy to try if you're just practicing at the course, or are pounding balls at the range. When I first heard of this I thought it was far fetched and un truthful... but it worked for me when I was hitting drives for women at this charity event. It was a par 5 with a pond and me and another guy stood out there and were paid 10 dollars by the 4 some for us to hit 4 golf balls for them. It all of course when to the charity... but it was a good thing because they played our drives right off the green. But let me know if that worked for you... or if it was just a fluke for me.... either way it was pretty cool. But it doesn't take much at all you just put a little bit of it on the face of your club and spread it with your finger... remember a little goes a long way. Well let me know.... thank you in advance.

You are correct. A little chapstick on the face is definitely illegal, but reduces the spin on the ball and thus would tend to reduce slices and hooks and theoretically increase distance since you're hitting it straighter. I've seen a buddy do it, but never actually tried it myself.

we tried it a couple years ago...I didn't see a ton of help. One of the chapters in Rick Reilly's "Who's Your Caddy" was about this gambler that used to do that type of stuff when he hustled.

I played with some guys that did that a month or two ago and tried it on one hole. They both crushed their drives dead straight, but when he tried my driver (which by then I'd wiped the stuff off of) he duck hooked it into the woods. They did give me some good putting pointers though so it wasn't a total loss.

Yeah, Dewey Tomko; it was a hilarious chapter. Dewey will play ANY pro for money on several conditions. You can grease all your clubs with vaseline, there's no limit to how many clubs you can have in your bag (he carries 3 different left-handed clubs for various possible encounters with trees and other objects, you have to play where it lies at all times, including cart paths, sewer drains, sprinkler heads, etc., you have to play at HIS course, and you have to skip the par 5's, because the pros are too long and they eat him up on 5's. He says once you start greasing your clubs, you never go back.

Home Course:
Town of Colonie (69.7-70.1, 119-125)

I hadn't heard of that until a couple weeks ago. Then I came up to a tee box when I was playing a round a couple days later and noticed a tube of chapstick someone had left and wondered if people do that more than I think.
