9 wood ?

I've played twice in the past fortnight with players carrying a 9 wood. They say it replaces their 4-iron and 5-iron and it gave them a lovely soft landing when going for sloped greens.

I've had a quick look on the big UK websites but they don't seem to sell them, so I assume there's not much demand.

Do others play this club?

Sure, lots of women and seniors play it.  Haven't seen many good players with one.  I carry a 4 hybrid which isn't much different.  I'd recommend trying the 4H before I bought a 9W.

I carry a 4H (and a 3H) but it's a different ball flight (much shallower landing/harder to stop).

I've actually been debating getting at least a 7 wood, maybe even a 9 wood instead of a 3H or 4H. Haven't found a hybrid that I like yet, but I am still looking before I make a desision. But if I got a 9 wood also, I'd have to take a club out of the bag, I have 13 in there now, not sure what I would take out. I like having a lot of wedges.

Callaway Diablo Edge Tour Hybrids

Have just bought these to replace my Wilson 3H and 4H so still settling in with them.

Those are nice ones.  Depending on the conditions and the course you are playing I could see dropping a hybrid from the bag and replacing it with a high lofted fairway wood.

Thanks. I bought them untried. I have the matching 3 wood which I love so assumed the hybrids would be as good. So far so good but still getting used to them. They are very easy to work but that means if I'm a little offline I'll see some serious draw/fade.

You might try a lower kick, active tip shaft (if you don't already have one)

My Father who is 65 has had a 7w for sometime and loves it, earlier this year he started looking at the possibility of getting a 9w but here in New Zealand couldn't find anywhere that sold left handed ones, infact he was told that 'they didn't make them'. I did some searching for him and found www.thomasgolf.com where they make custom woods right up to 25! I am not joking... so to cut a long story short he had a left-handed 9w sent down (took about a week) and hasn't looked back since, he uses it where previously he may have used a 5 or a 6 iron, and as he puts it he hasn't the strength or flexibility to successfully use longer irons anymore so with a nice smooth swing of a 9w he can still get the distance and height that he requires

My 9-wood gives me a very high ball flight and 3-iron distance, something I can't get with a hybrid. Gary Player put a 9-wood in his bag years ago for the same reason, and has stated that if he had one during his prime, he may have won more tournaments. Described it as a high-trajectory club with a 3-iron carry.

I've been playing Ping G15 with 20 and 23 degree hybrids lately. This winter I developed a bad pull/draw with my shorter irons and hybrids so I decided to use my old Callaway S2H2's for a while. The set includes 3, 5, 7, 9 woods(Big Bertha Warbirds). I like the ball flight of the 9wood compared to the Hybrids, as mentioned, the soft landing it produces.  I play "Geezer Golf"(70 yrs young) so I'd be  one to recommend to the older golfers to try one. I use the 9 in place of the 3-4irons. I guess I've never really switched from fairway woods to hybrids like so many have done.
