No as a 12 handicap. Yes as a 20 handicap. Just my opinion which shows my bias.

I've got a set, the Nike Vr Pro Combo. I like it, though I wish they had options to let you chose which iron you want in which style. For example, my set is PW-8 blades, 7-5 cavity backs, and 4-3 pocket cavities. If I could fully customize it, I might make the 7 (and possibly the 6) blades, and I might get rid of the pockets altogether. All of that is to say, there are upsides and there are downsides to progressive sets. If you can hit a blade 8 iron and a cavity back 5 iron, you might be able to get away with it.

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

If by "progressive set" you mean something like the Nike Vr Pro Combo, then look into them with your 12 handicap. If you mean a set that progresses to five-irons that are really 5-hybrids, then I stand by my earlier post. Not for the lower handicap player.

I was refering to using 3-6 hybrid;s that progress to iron's, and move off of the full  high irons. My reason- I am 6 months past having 5 bypasses done, and ready to get to it. I am still strong and have a full ok from the doctors, so its ok to start again. I am thinking about the loss of power and the 12 handy cap may change.  So far the swing feel's ok, but I am slower I think,  which for me is probly a good thing, so this is the reason for the question.  I started practice again with my medicus driver and 5 iron set, inter- changing  with my clubs back and forth,  but yet to go out to play a full round on a course. On the range I am shorter on distance then usualy,  about 20-25 yards with a full swing, so It has me considering it. The power, that power pop at the full square address position you get, seems like it is there,  but just not as much as before. Was thinking the hybrids might help.  I was observed by another player who said I was around 65-68 speed. last year at the local golf shop it was about 72-75 they told me.

    • The Golfing Machine calls a shorter full swing motion “pitching” IIRC but I don’t think that’s what was going on here. Did you get video or anything? Launch monitor data?
    • ^ right here. A short game pitching motion is not the same as a full swing in feel nor intent. It’s just not a mini-swing at all. Now if the instructor said to make slow full swings with a 6i and try to hit them only 100 yards, that would be more in line with what I view full swing instruction to be.
    • How does he fit for clubs with that setup?  I get this to an extent, but plenty of players have slightly different patterns with different clubs throughout their bag, but using that logic why not start with 3 foot putts or 5yd chip shots? I have quite different feels for a 20-40yd pitch shot than I do for a 140yd shot. Loft presentation at setup and impact, ground contact, weight transfer (or lackthereof), etc are all different on a 20-40yd shot vs a full iron shot.  If you enjoyed the lesson and found value in it that's great, personally I'd be a bit annoyed if I went in and wanted to work on full swing stuff and this guy has me doing 20-40yd pitch shots for an hour with my lob wedge.
