Only recently, I've started hitting up my local driving range and 9 hole course frequently. By frequently, I mean daily. I've definitely been bitten by the golf bug. That's why I am worried that I will get no opportunities to golf when I go to college in mid-August. It is right in the middle of a large city, but I think there might be a decent public course not far from my dorm. Would it be too unusual for me to keep my clubs in my dorm and take a taxi or something to the course on occasion? I just really don't care to give up golf. If this sounds very strange, it is because I am from an extremely rural area and am a little confused as to how this will work in a metropolitan area. I am also wondering if anyone (other than collegiate golfers) bring golf clubs to college.

Thanks!

I always just kept them in my dorm closet when I stayed in a dorm.  Just remember that it takes away space from your small dorm room and make sure its okay with your roommate.  To get to the courses I just become friends with others who had cars or who commuted that I could ride with.  I would never pay for a taxi.

But trying to find the time to play is the hard part.

With good time management, you should be able to golf plenty in college. I'd recommend a small stand bag, as you will likely be carrying your clubs. You will meet plenty of people that enjoy playing golf--some will have an automobile. Some metropolitan areas have good public transportation, and you might be lucky to find a bus or train route that works.

Why would it be unusual?  I am in college and play all the time but I live at home still and have a car so transportation is not an issue for me.  I am sure you will be able to find someway to get to the course, bring the clubs!

Just don't let college take a back seat to golf. Did that last semester and I'm definitely regretting it. I'd get out of class around 12 and be at the range or course the rest of the day.

I do not have enough money to do that, thankfully? Lol! Actually, I'm not sure how my income vs expenses will be, so that might not be true.

When I went to college the local course would let students play for $8 during twilight, on weekdays.  All you had to do was show them your college id.  Might have something like that in your college town?

When I was in college there was a "golf club" - basically a student-run organization that got some funding from the university and had severely reduced rates with the local courses (2). Benefits included car-pooling with other kids, meeting other golfers, off-season parties, etc. If there isn't one at your school, look into starting one....

Just found this: " The Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Club was created in order to promote the game of golf among Vanderbilt students and faculty/staff. By introducing golf to those who have not played before and providing experienced players with more opportunities to practice. It is our hope to make the game of golf more accessible to Vanderbilt students. We plan on accomplishing this goal by bringing together Vanderbilt golfers and making the regular playing of golf more affordable for everyone. All Vandy students and faculty/staff of every skill level are more than welcome to join us to either learn the game for the first time, or continue to develop their abilities in a fun and laid back atmosphere." Apparently this is only on Friday afternoons, but it sounds like a good deal.

Thanks!

Golf clubs in my dorm were a normal sight. Granted me and my roommate are both professional golf management students.

    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
    • I use GPS;  it may not be as accurate, but neither am I.
