Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone here has ever entered any long drive competitions?  I have been thinking about entering some events ive been driving the ball around 330-340 yards.  I never really thought about entering any tournaments until i was trying out new drivers at golf galaxy and the employee said something about it to me after seeing my swing speed was around 125-128.  I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or if im even long enough to enter a competition.

I wouldn't trust the monitor at a store necessarily, and it's totally possible he was buttering you up to sell you a club or 14. That said, if you can get mid 120s on a consistent basis, you can probably do respectably on a small competition. If you can't hit over 300 on demand you have no business showing up though, and even if you can hit it 340 you may get beaten by a decent bit. Just don't expect sponsorships or anything, and it may negatively affect your game.

There a pretty straight forward par 4 hole thats about 350 yards at my home course that im usually around the green and occasionally on.  So I know i've got 340+ in me, and i usually hit the ball around 310-320 on just a smooth swing. I was just in the shop to get an extra stiff instead of a stiff, even though you're probably right about that guy trying to butter me up.  Also I heard something about long drive drivers that have 50" long shafts and 6.5 degrees of loft.  Don't know how much those things would add but im assuming another 10 or 15 yards.

Well, you'd have to adjust your swing most likely. I can't imagine you'd keep your tempo the same with a 50", or even a 48" driver. The Cobra Long Tom, which is only 48" and uses a light head, is around an E2 swingweight. LD heads are usually a bit heavier I believe, and 2 extra inches would get you into the F range I think. They're super hard to swing accurately, but when you hit them solid I'd expect like 10mph more swing speed from the length alone, maybe adding some decent yards. But remember the pros hit into like a 100y wide, flat field and have big slices and hooks that would never be playable on a course. They don't have anything to aim at, and get like 6 tries to put one in the grid. Plus they're using a distance ball that doesn't spin, so using like a ProV1 would result in their balls going further to the sides. That sort of margin for error can't translate to the course well.

Yeah I understand what you're saying.  I was just thinking if I could do well in a tournament every now and then and make a couple hundred or even a thousand that would go a long way to a broke college kid like me.  Im sure it would be a tough adjustment from one of those drivers to a standard driver but the best part of my game has always been my driving and I think its an adjustment i could make.  Appreciate the advice though man

If I'm you, I'd go for it. Don't buy new equipment or adjust your swing, just go out there with what you have and let it rip. You'd probably be surprised at the results and I'm sure it would be a blast to participate in.

I saw a guy cranking 122mph yesterday and it sounded like cannons going off when he hit it.  I say go for it as well, should be fun and might earn a few bucks.

I know a guy that can hook you up with a great driver either for everyday golf or for long driving if your interested. My swing speed on the course is about 120-125 and I can get it to 135 or so. As hard as you swing you will dent or crack the club face of a standard manufacturer driver and the shafts will not be able to withstand it as well. PM me if your interested I got a Geek DCT 9* white driver with a House of Forged Ultralight XX shaft and a mid size grip put on. Customizing is free and so is shipping and handling. He will also discuss your options with you before so you can figure out what head and shaft will work best for you.

I paired up with a legit long drive competitor before on the golf course.........

I was highly entertained and amazed.  He did hit some wayward shots, but also some unbelievable amazing shots too.  IE......340yd carry over a ditch and he hit it nearly 50yds past it!  stuff like that.....

On wet fairways, his drive came to rest inside the 100 marker on a 460yd par4.  Stuff like that....he said his clubhead speed was 140 and I believe him.  He said that is the status quo for competitive long drivers...

I don't remember his name, but he did say most of the guys on the long drive circuit have club head speeds around 140.

      Have a 19° (moved to 20.5°) Titleist 915H. I just love the club. Beautiful feel off the sweetspot, high launch, soft landing. Versatile. In the future, with less overall speed I will replace my 4 and 5 irons with another hybrid, something around 26°.

      Broke the head of a Stealth Plus on a warm up. TaylorMade send me a new head but I decided to upgrade it to the new IQ10 LS and pay the difference. While I was waiting for the 8° head to arrive at the store I messed around with all the multi brand putts they had available. I instantly liked a black TaylorMade Spider, not the new one but very similar. The weight felt perfect. Big line in the middle for easy alignment. I was playing and old Zebra so the change in technology and feel was huge. Fast review of both clubs.. Driver QI10 LS. I always hit to ball up in the sky. I was playing the stealth at 7° with a 60g X low flight shaft and I was still hitting it pretty high. With the QI10 playing it at 6° now is almost hard for me to hit it high, with the same shaft the ball comes out lower and with less spin. so I'm really happy with the change. Putter Spider. I love it. It took me an afternoon to figure out how to grip it (it comes with a superStroke grip) but after that it all came into place. More stable on short putts and a good weight to swing smoothly on long putts and with added forgiveness over my old zebra.

      I have a 2h but we don’t get along anymore. It’s a bit of an abusive relationship - she gives me just enough hope once in a while that things are going to be better and then it’s back to the same old shit. I went to a PING fitting recently with the intention to replace the hybrid with a 5w or something, thinking maybe I’ll be better with a fairway wood than a hybrid. But it turns out the best club I hit that fits in that slot in the bag is another hybrid so I ordered it.

      Not the last thing I bought or bought anything at all but Sun Day Red stuff seems a bit overpriced for it essentially being rebranded Nike apparel. I'm hearing the resale prices are wild though. Either way, I highly doubt I will indulge as I'm not much of a brand guy or a collector. But to keep up my super nice guy image have never turned down a gift though 😇 Tiger doesn't seem to sell stuff like MJ or Kanye did.
