I just posted a question about the 10 finger grip, and I was just wondering what kind of grip you use, recommend, or teach. Any extra information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ryan

Didn't know you had to be a teacher to know that a good grip is fundamental, lol. There is a solid reason why the 10 finger grip isn't taught very often, it doesn't encourge the hands to work as one, though you will see those with arthritis or similar problems use it since it causes less stress. The most comonly taught grip is the vardon, where the pinky of your right hand (switch it for lefties) rest in between your index and middle finger on your other hand. It is taught because it encourages the hands to work as one. the third grip is the interlock where you link your right pinky (again switch it up if you are a lefty) with your index finger on your other hand.

If anyone here suggests a grip for you they are not a teacher/pro. Since you need to know the hand size, hand strength, phyiscal build, swing shape and a whole boat load of other factors. You should see an actual pro to determine what grip works best for you. But remember its always a personal choice, it is what you think works for you more so then what works for everyone else. Traditional is not for everyone ^^.

I use the interlock like tiger woods and jack nicklaus. It started out because I originally had smaller hands in high school (i was about 5'9), now 6'3 ish I could switch my grip but I enjoy the control I believe I have with it .

I'm an interlocker...started as a 10 finger as a kid, was an overlapper in college and realized that the interlock makes sense for me. If it works with some of the better pros, then it might as well work for me.

Sorry, I didn't write it correctly at first (edited now). I just meant which do you use or reccomend, and for the teachers and pros, which do you teach. I didn't mean to make it sound like only teachers and pros know which grip to use. My apologies again, and for the little I know about grips, everyone is a pro to me!

Thanks again,
Ryan

Lol that is perfectly fine, I know alot of people that won't take advice unless it is from a pro (9 times out of 10 that is a good thing). Pros are the ones that know what they are doing since well they are pros, lol. Sorry if what I posted came off a little concieted, most certainly not the case

But yea a pro can help you find a good grip.

It doesn't matter to me much. A ten finger and interlock tend to be a "Hitters" grip and the overlap tends to be a "swingers" grip.

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.

What exactly do you mean by hitters or swingers grip?

Thanks,
Ryan

Hitter/Swinger grip
Generally you can think of it as how you approach the game of golf.
Are you try to hit the ball ?
Or are you trying to swing the club ?

So if you are a hitter you are more for power (such as myself) and tend to have more athletic swings, while there are people (swingers) that approach the game through accuracy and have very strong mechanics.

Atleast that is how I always thought of it

The size of your hands also seems to have a bit to do with which grip is "most likely" to work best. I've read (and found for myself) that an interlocking grip generally works better than overlapping/Vardon for those of us with smaller hands.
Cleveland - HiBore XL (9.5* Fuji Fit-On Gold Stiff)
Bobby Jones/Jesse Ortiz - 3W & 21* H3 (Stock Stiff)
Ben Hogan - Apex FTX 4-FW (Apex 4 shafts)
TaylorMade - rac TP 56.12 satin & 60.6 black
Scotty Cameron - Mil-Spec Newport 2 (33" standard)

Used a baseball grip, and convinced most of my buddies that it was the way to hit a ball properly. I lost power and blistered the hell out of my fingers with an interlock grip.

Now, when I switched to an overlap, I can't convince my buddies otherwise. Fine by me - I'll win every nassau.

I have a buddy who has be playing for 22+ years started when he was 8. He uses a ten finger grip and hits his irons amazing. I would put him up against anybody in iron striking, but his wood play is average at best. I think the overlap is the only way to go.

When I was 5 or 6, I was taught the interlocking grip and have kept it the same ever since. Arnold Palmer once said that the way his father put his hands on the club is the same way he still does... so it is important to get it right in the beginning.

In my bag todayâ¦.

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
