HI All:

I'm new here but have been reading for a while.  I appreciate everyone's comments on here and they've been very helpful at narrowing down my choices.  I've played a decent amount of golf and I usually shoot between 100 and 110.  I'm very eager to learn and am looking to buy my first set of new clubs.

So I think I'm down to choosing between 3 different sets:

1.  Nike Machspeed X  for $249  http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/nike-golf-2012-machspeed-x-irons.html

2.  Hireko Custom - I can build a set of the XK Irons 4 through AW with upgraded shafts (Appollo acculite 85)  and golf pride grips for around $250.

3.  Gigagolf Custom - I can build a set of their PowerMax GX922 irons 4 through AW with the standard True Temper shafts and upgraded golf pride grips for around $190.

Any thoughts on which one I should go for?

Thanks!

You could find out if you can return them if you're not satisfied. If you can't try them out, the Machspeed would have the best resale value (even though they are 3 year old clubs).

They're all pretty close in price and should play reasonably well.  I've been playing GX922s since I started golfing 3 yrs ago and have no issues.  I expect that I'll play them next year as well.  If you anticipate constantly buying and selling golf equipment, then resale value may be a factor.

Thanks, Topper!  I appreciate the feedback.  I anticipate using these clubs for 4 or 5 years, so I don't really care how much resale I get out of them.  I'll probably just end up giving them away.

I have a combo set of Acer XF/XF-HT Irons with Rifle 5.5 shafts if you are interested. 5, 6 & 7 are the XF-HT and 8, 9 & PW are the XF. The have Black Widow corded grips on them. I also have a nice set of Snake Eyes 685OS with Apollo Spectre Lites shafts here in the Flea Market. Either set can be had for $100 or less. I have spine aligned both sets of shafts. I also have a set of GigaGolf Ozzy Z4 irons, 4-GW with their True Temper Featherlite shafts here. PM or email me if you are interested.

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
