Hi All,

I've been playing all summer (and now into the winter!) with a real hodgepodge of clubs -

Walmart Putter

TaylorMade Burner Plus Irons

RBZ 3-Wood (stiff)

A Knockoff of the Calloway Driver from... about 1995 (Regular)

Lately, I've been using the RBZ off the tee because I can hit it 245+ and straight, and frankly, I was very close to out-driving my driver!  So today I went to the local golf shop and got on the launch monitor to find me a driver!  Here's what I tried:

RBZ Driver

R11 Driver

Calloway RazrFit Driver

Ping G20

Ping G15

Despite my best efforts to buy a state-of-the-art brand new club, I ended up with the G15!  I simply had the most confidence in it.  I was getting nearly identical numbers to the other drivers, and it felt the best.

Result:  I went to the range at my club - it took me about 10 swings to get dialed in.  I consistently put the range ball over the far end of the range.  With my old driver, I could only roll it up to the fence.  I ended up stopping because I figured it was poor form to lose all the range balls.  According to Google, it's 250yds to carry the fence at the range - considering that the range balls are extremely dead, I'm thinking I may very well be looking at a seriously upgraded drive off the tee.

While it's not the newest and the most expensive, I couldn't be happier.  Does anyone else still game the prehistoric G15?

I use a G15, and I will use it until it becomes broken! It's great. (Can you tell from my avatar that I like it?) The newest clubs are not always the best clubs. If it works the best, keep it forever. Don't be distracted by the shiny!!!!!

The G15 is my current driver, and I'm quite happy with it. I upgraded from a G10, and think the 15 is a lot better.

I may take a look at the G25, though.

tend to agree that the newest are not always the best.  that being said the technology is improving things a lot so playing with even 3 or 4 year old clubs mean you are probably not getting out of your game what you might get from a newer set...I've finally upgraded to the r11s - well on demo from golfredefined dot com but it has made a huge difference to my drives.  had it tweaked by my local golf pro, even though it is a demo.  I'm longer than my old R9 by about 20 yards and my tendency to slice it "drastically" reduced.

Yeah - I'm definitely on the 3-4 year plan.

Ha - I'll do my best!  I am very much a slave to the marketing campaigns though.  I love the shiny!

Yeah, G15 driver and 4 wood. They are great clubs, forgiving and good distance - and they look good as too! My G15s will be in the bag for a while.

In my Sun Mountain 14 Way Stand Bag:

Driver - Ping G30 10.5* : Fairway - Ping G30 18* : Hybrids - Titleist 915H 21* & 915 H 24* : Irons - Mizuno JPX 850 Forged 5 - GW : Wedges, Vokey 54.14, Vokey 58.12 : Putter - Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 or Ping Craz-E-R  : Ball - Bridgestone B330RX, Cart - Cliqgear 3.5

To be honest I think we are all slaves to the shiny!

Probably just as well - otherwise we wouldn't buy anything!

I won the long drive contest in a local tournament this year with my Biggest Big Bertha from 1998 so I can't fault you on using an "old" club. If you hit the driver well and have confidence in it, who cares how new it is and think of the money you saved.

Wow. That is super impressive. Grip it and rip it!

I've got that combo too!

:tmade: SLDRs 14* driver, 17* fairway, 19* and 22* hybrids | :odyssey: Versa White #1 putter

:nike: XR Pro 24*, 27*, 31*, 35.5*, 40*, 45*, 50* irons | :vokey: SM4 54*, 58* wedges

I'm aiming for that combo! Have the G15 4w in reg flex and 4h in stiff so looking to add the driver now. Currently play an old McGregor stiff 10.5 driver but buddy is selling his reg G15 9.0 driver for small money so I am tempted... Am I crazy to consider regular? I hit the stiff OK but have a feeling reg would suit better. No launch monitors near where I live so gotta go on instinct!

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
